Now I could be wrong - and often am - but I think that Grundy would be great at releasing what would will be a triple A ball-winning midfield in 2024:

Taranto
Hopper
Prestia
Bolton
Martin

Yes, the cost could be prohibitive. But we will loosen considerable cap space in the off-season.

Yes, we have Nankervis already. But he’s not as good as Grundy in any facet bar perhaps leadership.

Yes, we have Ryan already. Samson is a very, very good prospect but still a stripling with 2-3 years of protection possibly still required.

Importantly, Ryan can play forward alongside Lynch while he moonlights as second ruck under Grundy.

A solid notion of you ask me, particularly if we change our focus to exploiting 666 for a change. We certainly now have the midfield to do it.

Depends on where we wanna spend our $$$.

And if we see ourselves contending with this excellent midfield roster.

Nah, sorry Carts, we need a key forward, we have 3 rucks already. I think we need to give Ryan more opportunities tbh.

Grundy is a small upgrade on Nanks which some may debate also.

Fair enough YOTT.

I dunno, I see Grundy as more than a minor upgrade tactically though.

He’s a ruckman who could reverse our entire stoppage method and give oppo teams something entirely new to think about.

Nank easily beats the current Grundy iteration in every key stat this year. Hitouts, disposals, clearances, one-percenters, and intercepts.
Grundy is going at just over half a goal a game so hardly a threat forward either.
Hard PASS for me.

Wonder if anyone will take him on.

if you got him in a Jack Bowes/Adam Treloar type bargain clearance sale,

youde be mad not to take a look.

although I thought his body looked *smile* at Collingwood.

Could be a good in at the right club, but the price is too high. How many years to go on the monster contract? He'll get paid, but looking like he could be a 110kg pass the parcel, 4 or 5 club player and all paying a slice of his wage.

I'd rather keep Soldo.
Yeah. Looking at our potential list for 2024, including an astute free agent or two, the cliff doesn’t necessarily beckon.

However, I feel we really need to improve our stoppage work further, over and above the strides we’ve already taken under Mini

Two contending clubs seemingly writing him off. What's that smell?
I think it is circumstantial. The Dees have Gawn, playing them both is always going to be a struggle, and their lack of key forwards highlights the ineffectualness as key forwards.
The Pies just realised they were paying him too much.

If you were picking a team from scratch you would pick Grundy over Nank i reckon. Better tap ruck, and more influential around the ground. but not as good an intercept mark.

But we have Nank, he is our captain and i reckon he is a key to our team. We cant play them both, and the upgrade to Grundy would be so minimal the negative of either trading Nank or sitting him in the VFL would override any positive.

The Stan doco is interesting in hindsight. The Dees and Gawn told Grundy he would be playing 70% ruck with Gawn up forward.

That was never going to work. Gawn is the best ruck in the AFL. He is probably the best rucking forward in the AFL. But he isnt a particularly good forward.
Grundy is one of the best rucks in the AFL, but isnt particularly good as a rucking forward, and is ordinary as a forward.

I reckon both Grundy and the Dees list managers badly misread that option.

I reckon ruckman are all got only child mannerisms. They don't like sharing. This is why I reckon Nank and Grundy won't work.

Every club wants a good second ruckman. But every good second ruckman wants to be a first ruckman. Unless Nank gets injured, suspended or we give him the old Jeff Hogg treatment (which will not happen), Soldo will never be our first ruckman. I reckon Soldo will have his hand up for a trade this year.

I also think Ruckman are a bit over-rated and having one in your top 5 paid players is silly. I'm also 5 foot 6 so maybe I have issues!

When was the last time a top 3 ruckman won a premiership (besides Gawn)?

Justin Madden? Simon Madden? Jack Dyer?

Grundy is a bit of a cat at times for a ruck. Not much physical presence. Too expensive for what you will get.
