The Finals thread

Essendon got found out a bit today, smashed in the contested possessions by a team that's probably going to get smashed itself next week. Going to need a huge amount of improvement from their 3-5 year players like Myers to go forwards next year

Essendon: just goes to show the futility of a final 8. But it did get a crowd of 90, 000!

We would've been smashed today too.

That's pretty obvious from the outcome of our last game against them, but some of our best players are in their late teens early twenties with more upside, most of the Don's best (Waston, Monfries, Stanton) are are few years older and the capacity for further improvement is limited.

Pre game when Gavin Brown was asked the player they worried about most on Essendon he said Fletcher, he's gone now so the bombers are taking one step back already.

Yes we would have. I'd still take our list.

They seem to have a lot of good ordinary footballers, particularly in the midfield, the only star in the making is Hurley.

heard bombers are right into maloney from melb

That would be fruitless II think, Moloney is Melbourne through and through, barracked for them as a kid.

Bombers really need to be proactive traders in the off-season, holes everywhere and a lot of deadwood to deal with.

Yes, hopefully they follow the Richmond 2001 model and think they're only a Jackson, Graham and Morton away from a flag :hihi

We'll take their 1st and 2nd rounders.

I honestly think we are a quality ruckman away from being a better team than Essendon .

We also have 3 guys that will be big game players, Riewoldt, Martin and Cotchin. I think those three will thrive in a finals game on the big stage. Could almost throw Deledio in there as well.

Essendon have Hurley as the only guy I could see being a match winner.

I like what I am hearing out of the Essendon camp after get smashed. Seems they are quite happy with their year and quite happy with where they are at.

Patrick Smith was giving them a nice whack today which was good.

So did Robbo jb:

WHAT I DON'T LIKE

1. Essendon

It's a long list. Hille a worry, Davey too, McVeigh has plenty on his mind, Reimers acts tough but doesn't play tough enough (what was that on Marc Murphy?), Colyer butchered it, Jetta was smashed by Yarran, as a group defensively inept, small forwards inept, beaten for intensity and on the spread, and, as expected, Carlton's small defenders feasted with 10.6 from Garlett, Betts and Walker. Essendon's past six matches v the top five made up of tight win v Cats and five losses by 57-plus points. It says enough. #thanksforthestatsJosh.

the bombers have a lot of players that to me are average to middling
in ability...do they think they will improve to take the next step
i hope that is their thinking but to me players
like Davey, Jetta, Reimers etc have limited scope....

mind you their cheque book is big so dont be
surprised if they open it with FA on our doorstep..

I was gobsmacked by an afl-website season review which rated them a B+

and said Hird's first season in charge as coach proved the future at the club is bright.

umm... congratulations!

How is Hird's first season any different to Knights? Fell into finals with pretty much the same list to be the filler team. Pretty much same number of wins give or take 1 win. Both times smacked and embarrassed in the first final.

Not much different, at all, as far as I can see.

The Dons have been treading water with an ever-diminishing group of veterans who still do much of their heavy lifting. I was surprised yesterday at how tired Fletcher and Hille suddenly look. I know Fletcher has been battling injury all season but he is not getting any younger. Earlier this season I thoughy Hille looked like a player with a couple more good seasons in him but I'm not so sure having seen him play yesterday. I'd suggest their core senior group is on its last legs and it is this group that has lifted them into these two finals series. When Fletcher, Hille, McVeigh and Lovett-Murray move on, they will struggle.

If Hurley takes the money from GWS next year they will need the cheque book.

The Bombers need to cut hard and deep into their list otherwise the will stagnate in the middle of the pack indefinitely, I still reckon their midfield is the worst in the competition and their defence looks shaky, particularly if Hurley goes forward. If I was in charge, I'd be shopping around everyone with the exception of Hurley and Heppell and would start a major rebuild. It won't happen but it needs to happen, perversely making the finals this year could be detrimental in the long run.
