He got 3's in losses by 57, 50 and 9 points. Only Nathan Buckley with 4 x 3's in losing sides in 1998 has had more since 1984.

If records were complete, I'm sure they'd show players like Skilton regularly polled 3's in losses.

Skilton was a great player in a poor side in an era when umpires did a solo job and were respected for their character. Not too many other Swans players took votes away from Skilton. Skilton was a great player and deserving of his 3 Brownlows.

There would have been opposition players who contributed to their side's thrashing of GC on that day that would have deserved the 3 votes.

I have no problems with a player from a side being thrashed picking up one or two votes but 3 votes?

The expectation that the 3 should go to a player from the winning team is a relatively recent thing. Certainly it wasn't as prevalent in the days when Bunton and Reynolds won medals in teams that had three or four wins for the season.

I don't have a problem with it if the umpires are being truly objective and not merely looking out for their favourite player. Surely there was no bias involved when Zeno Tzatzaris got BOG in a side that lost by 50 points!

You still can't tell me that the 3 umpires in each game ALL agree on the same 3,2 and 1.The umpire's should individually cast their own 3,2, and 1 votes. The vote count would be higher, but who cares.

And all the Crap at the start of the count focusing on Judd and Goodes winning a 3rd medal.Well that came back and bit them on the Arse didn't it?It's not all about those two.

Well done to Swanny though. :clap

How long before the Brownlow starts is it that the AFL pre-count the votes and know the result?
An hour? A day? A week?

I read somewhere it is usually around the half way mark of counting the votes on the night.

I would love a Dusty acceptance speach where he gives a don't argue on the way to the podium!

Always thought this too. It would also give a better spread and a fairer result. If a bloke dominates a game, he could get 9. On the other hand, if it's an even spread, you could wind up with 9 different players getting no more than 3 each.

Dustin Martin doesn't do speeches (B&F 2011 anyone?)...

Loved the highlights last night which showed Hale taking his shorts off and they played McAvaney saying something like 'Wooahhh, doesn't that get you excited' :hihi

Wasn't that system used for a few years? Maybe only with 2 umpires.

Or am I getting it mixed up with the hockey competition I used to umpire where 2 umpires gave their own individual votes?

I was just looking through the photos of players and their partners, and I have to give Nick Maxwell credit for taking his Mum to the Brownlow. He must be a decent bloke deep down, although i still dislike him!
