MATCH REPORT
by Dyer'ere
I've spent most of the week looking at the Dreamtime game, and pretty much our entire season, as a function of a culture of delusion.
I don't believe there can be such a thing as a complacent player, only a complacent coach.
Dimma himself had previously blamed two of our early losses on 'complacency' in an early presser.
From the bounce in the Dreamtime game Essendon was a lot more active than we were. They were much more aggressive too.
Our first forward move was from a CB clearance generated by excellent ruck work from Hamspon who brilliantly set Cotchin to space forward of the crush. Cotchin then had to pick a target inside the arc. Griffin was behind the zoning Essendon tall and the kick was easily picked off. (Griffiths should have spoiled late and given up the free. He had to hit that contest harder and sooner.)
It struck me as the game wore on that we didn't really recover from the move of Carlisle to CHB. It started badly for us and got progressively worse until we finally picked off some wider targets (Jack) in the final quarter – junk time. Carlisle has three times the aerial impact of Hurley and it was a nett gain to the Bummers.
But there was never any prospect of us hitting up wider targets inside the arc in the first quarter. We were getting our heads punched in and couldn't get a kick. It was a belting despite the fact that for the first fifteen minutes of the game we had turned up and were just getting beaten by a better side.
Fletcher's goal was a shocker. He just exposed our eighteen year old for lack of experience. And they should have kicked six plus in that period.
We got something going in the second quarter. There was some intensity in our attack on the ball and we were able, at last, to get a kick and some system.
But Essendon reasserted its dominance with a goal to Heppell at the seventeen minute mark. A poor tap from Hampson, a sloppy tackle from Chaplin, Martin out of position, Grigg lost. It was hopelessly inept. Half-arsed *smile*.
Hibberd had a hard tag. Mozza. Who got lost at a crucial stage when he chose to stand the mark instead of running hard to pick up his man. Deledio was there Morris had to peel back onto his man. Sloppy. Demoralised play.
The selection of Ivvy so fresh from a long time off smacked either of desperation or resignation. I wasn't sure which until we subbed Hampson (who was one of the blokes NOT bludging) just after half time.
And of course it hurt us. With Essendon so easily finding a free man it was crucial to get more run on the ground. Ivan can't keep up so leaving him on guaranteed one spare man to Essendon, particularly when the big fella went forward. They were smashing us on the counter.
Dimma chose to get more game time into Ivvy rather than address the problem of their loose men. Cue in the rack.
We didn't kick a goal in the third. It was a massacre.
In the second half Richmond players took turns to watch running opponents from stationary vantage points.
Our mids eventually formed little witness squads. Matt Thomas was by far the worst offender. The captain had given up and Deledio was missing. Jackson couldn't walk.
It was a big game. We gave up. Dimma put the cue in the rack with a substitution that sent a clear message to everybody, especially the playing group.
He gave up. We gave up. Early in the third quarter of the Dreamtime game Damian Hardwick retired our season.
In the lead up to Tyrone Vickery's undeserved recall to the senior team Hardwick said in a press conference “Sometimes you have to kid yourself into form.” Vickery promptly took another sh!t in his face.
Delusion is a very poor platform at the best of times. And is the first thing you attack in the worst of them.
Beavis was right to draw attention to the dedicated bludging of our players during the blockbuster Dreamtime game. But he's the one who has consistently failed to address it in smaller doses all season.
Hardwick's next delusion to clean up is the idea that blokes who can't walk should be playing every week. Daniel Jackson's forced his hand. Time to spell some crippled players. For example, when Deledio had a shot from fifty we all knew he couldn't get the distance.
Dimma doesn't want to flirt with form but he's happy to *smile* our future by grinding injured players into the dirt.
If he puts our injured players in the paddock we will become Fitzroy for four weeks. Then we'll face some facts.

Wow. What a depressing week. An unacceptable loss after an unacceptable effort. To top things off, I had my whole family with me for the first time ever at the 'G. I am pretty sure my wife won't be coming back anytime soon. The looks of boredom were only interrupted by glances of pity. Ah, to be a Tiger supporter.
Clearly the PRE crowd were also disengaged after the match, with only 31 turning up at the polls. Equalling the record for the lowest number of voters in this award, matching our 62 point drubbing at the hands of North Melbourne in 2013. Hopefully that isn't a harbinger of things to come!
The voters that did turn out, overwhelmingly put Martin in the top spot. Of all of our players, he is certainly still playing with freedom and the lack of hesitancy and second guessing that has infected so many. Ellis continued to play well and Chaplin has continued his return to our best defender. Outside of that, there was little to crow about.
Carn' the Tiges!
