Tambling (merged)

A team of brilliant midfielders and serviceable KPP will win flags

A team of Brilliant KPP and serviceable midfielfers won't.

Look a WCE now that Judd and Cousins are gone. They are rabble at the moment.

And they also have no decent Key position forwards, which doesn't help.

Did I say we should have used our number one pick on him??? We already picked up a midfielder, why not use the second pick to try and fill a glaring weakness?

Possibly because in any draft there's a small number of perceived standouts where the gap in quality between them and the next tier is quite significant. It seemed at the time of the 2004 draft the 4 players being discussed in those terms were the ones that were picked in the top 4.

I agree that they seemed to be the standouts, and the Hawks had luck with Franklin, but having bypassed KPP for several drafts, and having only Kellaway and Gaspar as decent tall defenders and Richo as the only decent tall forward, I beleive we had to look to the future there. We have since, but have used later, more speculative picks to try and fill these gaps.

Anyway, it is just an opinion- I would like nothing better than to see Bling turn into a star and have egg on my face.

Hawks already had a midfield, they started looking for talls. We will do the same now that we have quite a number of good potential young midfielders for the future. Why isn't anyone arguing why we chose Deledio over Roughhead?

Out of interest, I wonder if the Bulldogs forums craps on all day about why they picked Griffen in front of Franklin.

Yep, its done. We've got what we've got. I'm confident our boys will become bloody good players for us.
End of story.

Only if they have Dawks fans trolling them. Its notable that the only people who bring this up now are Dawks fans looking to troll.

It will never go away. Some idiot under the mistaken impression they are saying something clever will keep brining it up for the rest of Bling's career or until Buddy implodes, whatever comes first.

Why is it that people who criticise are considered trolls, while people with blinkers on who can't seem to get a grip on reality are supporters?

Tambling doesnt need to prove anything to anyone this week. Personally, I hope he lays 10 tackles, kicks 3 goals and gets 30 possies, but its probably not going to happen.

If all goes well, this week the message to the silly people will be that the whole issue is now put to rest. But imo it was out to rest in november of 2004. Everyone went their own way and we have got our hands on two great midfielders which is what we needed.

actually with the benefit of hindsight, which you are so liberally using, it's clear that our midfield stocks at the time were as bad, if not worse than our KPPs. We should have gone best available at 1 and 4. The problem was that along with the Dogs and Hawks (once) we got it wrong on Buddy. Btw before you saw it, there is no evidence that late picks are proportionally more successful for midfielders than KPPs.

Is it possible that the top picks become better players because of the amount of pressure put upon them to perform ?

Hmmm.... interesting concept, probably a lot of factors that determine a star, however the top picks do tend to have more publicity than say a Foley from off the Rookie list?

Anyway, I hope Tambling has a good one this weekend v the Hawks.

Define 'great'? Forever I have read in this thread how Tambling is showing 'signs' and how he is constantly improving (just on a constantly upward curve). Now suddenly after a few good games this year he is a 'great' midfielder? He that shall not be mentioned is already being rated by numerous media scribes as one of the games top two or three most valuable players, and certainly the marquee player of the moment. Now that is 'great'.

Tambling on the other hand has a hell of a way to go before he can be defined as such, perhaps in time, but no one outside of Richmond would describe him as that at the present moment (although to be fair I think 'great' is a word that is overused and thrown about, I'm sure we would be more than surprised and amused at some of the players described as 'great' on other club forums by their supporters).

The mother of all stuff ups was Fiora before Pavlich. At least Richie is now showing signs that he potentially will reach Top 10/Top 5 draft pick capabilities. Unfortunate that Buddy is as good as he is, but the doubts on him mentally at the time were genuine and is still a good chance to rear its ugly head in the next year or two.

Fiora was diabolical.

I agree with your semantics about Richie being great, but such is life, move on. The best we can hope for is a Judd versus Hodge argument, whereby Hodge had a few injuries early which slowed his development, but is now one of HFC's top 3 players. Still short of Judd (who in his prime can be compared to the game's greats), but I don't think the hawks can complain too much about Hodge's output.

You're assuming facts not in evidence.

Yes that would be good, let's hope we are one day in a position to have that debate.
