Talking Politics

You've slightly misunderstood my previous post Sinner man or perhaps I wasn't quite clear enough.
My comment re the public service loving the Labor govt was simply in regard to Labor constantly growing, changing and overlapping the functions of the public service. Libs are usually the ones that rock up with the chainsaw n start trying to prune back the bloated bureaucratic mess.
They still love operating on the basis of minimum input or responsibility for maximum return, that's regardless of who's in office.
Golly, it'd be good to see that argument put to a room full of Victorian public servants: Teachers, nurses, firies, amobo's and let's not forget the coppers

We can always cut back on those pesky 000 call centre workers.

There are certainly a few lazy career public service workers around, but there are also plenty of lazy ignorant critics of public servants.

How often have you heard from Trump voters, to do your own research, stop being sheeple, dig a little deeper, yet they ALL come out with the exact same phrases, terminology and the basis of opinion, almost like they have been programmed to say specific lines.

Trump voters sound like anti-vaxxers who sound like 911 conspiracy troofers.

They sure are and they have no concept of irony.

The one thing you can look at with awe in the MAGA campaign, is the ability to manipulate group think, they have found a very solid way of being able to do that.
I know we are not resurrecting the US politics thread and that is definitely not my aim, I am just mentioning an interesting phenomenon that was talked about in an article in the The Age this morning.
There are many people who believe there is a new category of voter in the US that may be skewing the polling. There was evidence of this in the last mid term elections there.
These are people who are going to vote for Harris but are not declaring it either to their family and friends or to pollsters. The reason is that there is so much push back in some areas against people who are not with Trump. One Republican person said that he was aware of people who were going to vote for Harris but had Trump signs in their front yards.
No idea what the truth is and whether it is significant but it is interesting.

I think it could be significant. Here's an ad narrated by George Clooney on this very subject

Basically a lot of Americans are thick as planks. Their education system is sub-standard, sure they have world class universities, but if they had better educated citizens, charlatans like Trump wouldn't get close to running for the highest office. MAGA supporters are either incredibly stupid, racist or arseholes. Most are all 3.

Yep, I remember when I worked in Engineering at a uni they would take students from the USA but knew they would be having to play catch up.

The USA has some of the world's best universities, and some of the worst. Their university system is a dog's brekkie, they go down to a level we just wouldn't accept in an institution called a university.

On a completely different topic . . .

Hey, @DjJazzyPete WTF happened in the Botswana elections? The BDP out after 58 years. Quite the change. Sounds like a reduction in diamond revenues have soured the economy.

Who are the incoming government, what are they like?

Many highly educated Americans I have met in my working life should have taken two extra subjects

1. Geography and History of everywhere that isn’t the USA
2. Common sense

That being said there are plenty of Aussies I have worked in with some of the same issues.

Many years ago I was involved in a US based business that had subsidiaries in 7-8 countries in Africa. I had to deal with the treasury Dept in US head office and one of them asked me what the currency was in Africa … true story. Still makes me laugh.

I had an American ask me once "So how long does it take to drive from Australia to NZ?". I said "Quite a while."

Anyway, was I seeing things today with the orange criminal performing felatio on his mic stand at his last Putsch ?

It is one of those things, Americans are just not interested in the rest of the world, and a lot of them seem to barely know it exists.

The question about Africa reveals an attitude you often hear. Africa is often referred to as a whole. It is a very large continent with 53 countries. We can argue about whether it is too many countries but the borders were drawn by the colonists so hardly the fault of Africans.

Why has the US Presidential Election thread been closed? Are we just talking about it in this thread?

I’m starting to feel very confident of a clear Harris Victory.

Firstly, people are voting in big numbers. And when American’s vote in big numbers, the Democrats always win.

Secondly, there has been a late surge for her in the polls.

In 2016 and 2020, Trump’s poll numbers were lower than the final results and there has been a lot of talk of pollsters trying to correct this… but they are now releasing they have overcorrected.

I also think Trump’s demeanour is getting worse by the day. Some of the comments (ie. Liz Cheney) and actions (giving fellacio to the microphone) is nuts, even for Trump. He knows, I reckon.

Thirdly, many of Trump’s supporters are already making up fallacies about the election being rigged and/or stolen.

Trump voters sound like anti-vaxxers who sound like 911 conspiracy troofers.

I've started calling them "MAGA Cookers."

There's a lot of smoke and shadows behind the windows at the moment where polls, betting markets etc are concerned. This is one good, reasonably reliable article on why.

I'm having a bet on Kamala. Think a lot of phoney "Trumped up" info has the market being distorted a bit.

The result of this election will take a while to decide. There will be court challenges on the results that will be appealed all the way to the supreme court. This is especially true if it's a close election and Trump doesn't win.

Civil unrest is also a very real possibility in the US if it's close but Trump doesn't look like winning.

Yeh, lots of language coming from the Republicans about rigged voting, a desire to return to day only paper ballot voting etc. Already creating an excuse if they lose - hard not to see it illicit some dangerous reactions.

Interesting article, and certainly makes sense with what we hear constantly. BTW - on labelling polls partisan, how can a poll not be marked partisan when the group administering it has JD Vance as a co-founder. How partisan do you need to be?

As always, Trump only uses what he wants. Parades poll after poll and then calls a poll that goes against him as suppression. His language is what is the most worrying thing yet again, he doesn't just use wrong, he uses words like suppression and he does this in a very direct and meticulated way. If he loses, he wants another Jan 6 event, I'm sure of that. Whether it results in more loss of life than the last one, I suspect it will.

He and the republicans are gearing his supporters up for a war, not sure I'd be booking any trips to the US over the next 2-3 months.
