State of the game - PRE voice

What do we need to do with the game?

Easy fix: bring in a rule that you are not allowed to hold a player who is not in possession of the ball . . . wait a minute, isn't that holding the man - is that still a rule?

DS
Yep holding the man is treated now like illegal holds in the old world championship wrestling if you release the hold when the ump looks at you it's ok.

God, no.

The AFL has shown just this week that it is happy to change things mid-seasons, so that the tackle Burgoyne got away with last week is suspendable this week. So, they can revert back to 20-minute quarters, and should.

I'm still stunned Burgoyne is playing this week. What an absolute joke that is.

I understand the rationale, but, how about we go back to standard length quarters for the finals.

DS

Agree
Just as I was just defending the shorter quarters for the 17 games (above) I was actually wondering too if this issue was part of the AFL announcement
Surely it was only for the 17 rounds and that if we got to finals time with 4 weeks available we would revert to standard times - but don’t know if that was part of the deal or not

Yep, that's absolutely the primary reason for the change and is absolutely the right thing to do but even if the COVID threat passes I think it should remain for the season.

That makes much more sense but then the discussion would need to be should the finals be played under different conditions than the games that qualified teams for them?

Be only fair to also crack down on the forwards giving defenders a massive shove when the ball is 100 metres away so they can get a break on the lead as well.

We've got a draw that lasts 4 games and you reckon it's unfair if the game time changes? We've got teams playing in different states, we are ready to change the days between games (that will surely advantage some teams and disadvantage others) different travel schedules etc etc but for integrity we can't change how long games are? Some games are during day, some at night, and yet the length must be maintained?

Seriously flawed logic.

i dont like the shortened quarters but agree they should stay for the year.
i dont like the idea of any changes to scoring- such as 9pters, or play on off the post.

I liked the old kick in rule where players have to at least touch it to their feet to play on- the possibility of someone stupidly stepping on the line adds a little to the game i reckon.

not allowing shorter kicks, or not allowing marks for shorter kicks, or backwards kick only promotes flooding i reckon.
as much as we dont like it, the way the pies played forced us to man up more all over the ground, rather than everyone sitting down the line. as we are forced to cover short kicks the ground opens up longer.
its like when we played the crows all those years ago. we passed short and sideways (or at least the Bowdens did) because they let us. once they stopped putting numbers down the line and covered our short kicks we were forced to kick longer.

Your logic is sound, Richo. Your argument has merit. But 16-minute quarters is a fundamental change to the game as it has been played for 160 years and should be given the arse asap, if not sooner.

Yes agree, it was a radical albeit necessary change in an unprecedented time and no-one wants to see it continue any longer than needed.

But I agree with the AFL that round one 2021 is the right time to change back.
Sam McClure saying they'll change it sooner "if normality continues to return on a linear basis".

I still reckon we could revert back to normal quarters in the finals, would make the TV happy too as there is more time for ads.

DS

Games are played at various locations, on various days and in various weather. Teams often play games away from their home ground. Sometimes you have longer breaks, sometimes shorter. That's all normal in any season.

Surely some teams having to hub is a disadvantage over those not hubbing? Surely West Coast and freo have drawn the short straw. So they are automatically disadvantaged in comparison to the VIC sides. And form isn't that easily turned on and off. This is not normal. It's compromised. Radical albeit necessary. But not fair. Some teams are going to have less breaks between games, how do we equalise that scenario? Changing game length to me is just another change that whilst not "fair" is entirely OK if it is the best decision for the game overall.

This season is already compromised, having game time as sacred make no sense.

Given recent events introducing more uncertainty into the equation I can't see them reverting to reasonable length quarters unfortunately.

Gil is operating to financial imperatives and will be prepared to abide all sorts of inconsistencies to protect the bottom line.

Basically we're the only club who can give this year's flag any legitimacy by winning, given 3/4 would mean it's obviously no fluke. Any of seventeen other clubs will have an asterisk.

Yeh, the positive test will mean zero chance of proper game time.

They won’t this season, and once they introduced it, they weren’t going to. What gives me the *smile* about the rule changes is how much the media drive it. These idiots demand changes and when they’re made and don’t have an immediate effect they scream about introducing more changes. Leave the game alone ffs!

We are now seeing exactly why the shorter quarters are necessary and why it is sensible to maintain them all year.

Essendon and Melbourne have a game that now needs to be fitted in somewhere in the schedule, and Essendon may well have more and that may just be the beginning.

The shorter game time allows for a much lower injury risk if games are fitted in with 3-4 day breaks.
So some teams will be disadvantaged over others? Some will be forced to hub outside their states whilst others may not be? Some will have more frequent shorter breaks between games?

If the argument is simply protection of players that is one thing but to argue that it preserves integrity doesn't fly given the unfair nature of the season already.

Ultimately it will be a compromised premiership (if we get the season in) but I bet whoever wins it will celebrate accordingly.

Absolutely correct
Don't like it (and clearly many people loathe it) but it's always been a contingency that a week ago looked like it might have been too cautious and unnecessary - but all of a sudden it might ... just might ... end up being of value.

Have we had any word on house inspections being ruled an un/acceptable quarantine activity by the AFL?

Should Ollie Wines and the channel 7 reporter have just arranged to inspect the same house?

should Kasiah Pickett have had a house inspection gathering?
