What do we need to do with the game?

Just on the dew, it will be interesting to see the response from the MCC.

It is fair worse at the MCG than anywhere else on a bad night. I've helped with warm up drills before where I couldn't hold the football to kick it because I didn't have grippo on.

In parts of India it is comparable at times and makes day night cricket impossible but they use ropes and super soppers on the ground and spray some sort of chemical to help as well (probably illegal here!).

Hardwick definitely put the heat on them last night when he compared it to Adelaide Oval so it will be interesting to see if they respond.
What do they do on the Adelaide Oval?

The game currently is toooo short.
I've seen under 12 games go longer.
Absolute joke to shorten the game.
What Einstein came up with it?
Hocking the clown.
**Collingwood couldn't even run out a shorten BigM little league version of the game.
Stkilda has more chance winning this year's flag..

you can stick a broom on the back of a tractor and take the dew off.
Similiar to what they do on bowling greens.

Just being picky here but ....
If the kicker was standing 10m back from the bloke standing on the mark - does that mean he could kick it backwards 5m and it would be a mark because it was taken 15m from the point?
Why? Maybe to run down the clock?

mmm... hadn't thought about it. I think you just destroyed my idea. But there has to be a way around that, that I haven't considered

I want to see a block of games before I get a feel for whether any changes are needed. Ask me after round 5.

I understand that the quarters will go back to full length next year. I hope that's correct.

Whilst I'm basically against rule changes, I can accept them if I can see that the proposed change has been determined through thorough analysis and then proper trialing in a lower league.

Just changing things because Shocking had a "bright idea" isn't acceptable. Changing the size of the goal square or the kickout rules were supposed to improve the game and result in higher scores. Hah!

Last point........ bring back the Sub! Keep the 4 on the bench and add a Sub.

To think some in the media want interchange gone, if they did that last night would become the norm, it'll pick up in about 3-4 weeks once the players are match fit, they are all well underdone atm.
Just remember last yr we got 9 changes to "open the game up & improve scoring" yet we got the lowest scoring season in 52 yrs....

Thanks T saved me the trouble.
Ian's idea just doesn't work imo.

The rules do evolve with the evolution of the game. The problem at the moment is that they seem so quick to want to change things.

I seem to recall a fair bit of time and debate (and trials) before we moved to 50m penalties, bouncing every 15 m (as opposed to 10m) and the like. Also, rule changes happened less often.

I actually quite like the new kick out rule where you can play on, it is an evolution. The 6-6-6 is just wrong, this is Australian Rules Football, one of its distinguishing features is the fact that players can be anywhere on the ground (no off-side).

The very fact that the rules have unintended consequences is partly a result of not debating the rule changes and not trying them out first in lower level competitions. They just rush ahead with rule changes and are then embarrassed by the unintended consequences. Not good enough for the elite level of the sport.

The issue is they can change the fabric of the game over one weekend of footy.
If there is an outcry or something that wasn't received well, Gilligan & Shocking change it like its means nothing.
The shorter game will drive people away. I know people that drive 3-4 hours each way to come and watch a game. They won't waste there time to come and watch an abbreviated version of AFL.
They need to put the game back to what is was. Borders are opening, football is been played on weekly time slot. So there's no reason to keep the 16' qtrs.

does PRE have a shoulder shrug emoji? coz i'm not sure you understand what I am saying. All is am saying is that you measure the distance of the kick from where the mark was originally taken. thats it.

That would make forward kicks more risky. Might have to travel 20 plus metres But a backwards kick might only have to travel 5m if the kicker goes back 10m from man on Mark.

No backward kicks from a mark would be the only way...

How about no kicking back into your own D50? Free kick from where it lands in the 50 or where it crosses the 50. Or if you do its play on, stops the keepings off, time wasting.
Kicking backwards used to be an indictable offence...shows how tactics have evolved, possession now favoured over yardage.

When we get back to a more standard season in 2021 they should have a moratorium on rule changes and let the game evolve on its own. They won’t, though. It also doesn’t matter who’s running the show. Whoever it is will for some reason feel the need to keep messing around with the rules, and they’ll wind up doing what they’ve done for at least the last 30 years; change things and then have to introduce new changes to try and repair the damage the initial unnecessary rule changes created.

Not allowing backwards kicks cuts off the switch in play which often leads to overlap running and exciting ball movement.

Australian Rules has always been distinguished by the way it is a 360 degree game, get rid of that and you fundamentally change the game.

the wheel has never been reinvented, just tweaked a little here and there for smoother operation ..

Let me run a couple of scenarios for you.

1. We finish third on the ladder on percentage, the difference between us and Port Adelaide in second is less than the percentage they gained in beating Carlton over 20 minute quarters, as opposed to us who played them over 16 mins. Would that be satisfactory?

2. AFL announces we go back to 20 minute quarters from round three. After round 13 there is an outbreak of COVID-19 at Trent Cotchin's kids kinder. He tests positive. The entire RFC is then required to quarantine for two weeks, missing the round 14 and 15 matches. The AFL presents two options for Richmond, either share the points for the two games or play an extra game on the Wednesday after rounds 16 and 17.

If we stay at 16 minute quarters we have the flexibility to deal with issues like that without compromising the competition. You can simple suspend the season for a period of time and then come back with a compressed format. No-one is going to agree to risk their players in a compressed format with full time games, not least the players themselves.

if there’s another break out the season is over.
