Chol shows a lot of promise but nowhere near an AFL player at this stage. A year in the 2nds will do him the world of good.

Menadue will be a player.

What I liked about today was the obvious intent to do two things. One is to move the ball quicker from defence and the other is to swarm and tackle hard. Forget about the 70 point win, that's irrelevant. The important thing is that we seem to want to address the weaknesses in our game. We were much harder at it than the hAwks today and that's not about personnel it's about intent.

Fully concur. Ball movement much faster; not always running back off the mark; and the tackling and pressure was much tougher and more constant.
Altogether, made a big difference.

I like Cholly Oldie. Happy to see him play because of his upside.

I am even happy to go in with a smaller forward line, but as you can see with Lennon in the third a natural forward just gets into the right spaces, With the injuries we had if you weren't going to play Beanie today you basically never will.

Any idea why McBean missed lamby? Is he injured? Thought today would have been ideal to see him.

you can see we are trying to move the ball quicker from defence into our forward line, but we bombed it long blindly way too much. we still need to improve our ability to open up our forward line and hit up leading targets.

Our quicker ball movement out of defence was aided by not having momentum stoppers in Astbury and Chaplin down there.

correct but we can't rely on only rance and grimes as our key backs. don't know why we didn't give elton a try

Will take a win over a loss any day. But, we did to the Hawks what Freo did to us a week ago.

Like our young team last week where we played without our stars, so did the Hawkers.

No Mitchell, Hodge, Breust, Rioli injured early on, Gunston or Roughhead, just for starters.

Many sad after that Freo Game, pre season games don't mean anything, so let's not get too carried away.

Just savour the win and enjoy what we saw in our young talent coming through.

Is it just me or are Hawk supporters carrying on a lot about yesterdays loss? More than we are carrying on about a win?

Haven't heard much. What sort of stuff are they saying? I used to work with a mad keen Hawks supporter once. I learned very early on that it was pointless to try and talk sense with her about football where it concerned the Hawks. Had an excuse for everything they did wrong and when they won (often) she tended to focus on why they didn't win by more and how they were crucified by the umpires.

Don't think Taylor Hunt will play round 1. Scratchy performance.

Likely a repeat of Morris - one good year and the club then offers him an excessive and unneccesarily long contract.

Bit of stuff on facebook I've seen

So far in the Escort Cup we've seen a very different Richmond. A new side, irrespective of the personnel. It's a swarming, hunting Richmond all over the park with very quick ball movement, especially on the counter.

It's a style of football that is much busier than the type we usually play when we don't have the ball. And a style that is predicated on them getting the ball first. It is the dirty dirty 2-2-B and we're getting a lot better at it.

Structural changes have taken place and more are very likely. For example, a second tier clearance mid can be very effective at half back - see Reece Conca. The need for hit up tall forwards is reduced as more emphasis is on separation and less on aerial contests. Lennon may be a tall forward in lieu of someone like Griffiths.

Fewer tall backs may be used - a risk favouring attack over defence. And let's face it, everybody knows that you increase your scoring by rolling the dice more up the ground, not rolling it more in the forward line. Rolling the dice more in the forward line increases their score.

One more thing - we appear to be very on in the preseason. That is new. Usually we're scratchy and behind. We have plans for a big start to the season. Expect us to be undefeated after many rounds. Or at worst one loss. This will guarantee us a much higher finishing position. (What we do in the finals is entirely another matter.)

What is most noticeable to me in both our Escort Cup games so far is greatly increased activity and rapid ball movement. These are major indicators for a good start to the season.

I'll be very interested to see if we put the foot on the brake next EC game or keep the the workrate up. I expect the latter.

I don't disagree and these changes are positive and necessary, but I'm very wary of reading much into these largely meaningless pracccy games. For a start, you are not able to take into account very much of what the opposition are doing/not doing. Hardly anyone plays their strongest list and it's all experimental.

For you to say, 'Expect us to be undefeated after many rounds. Or at worst one loss,' is laughable on this basis.

Remember how we thrashed the Bulldogs in NAB 2015? I thought we were looking great, but what happened in the season proper; they towelled us up. Can't remember now, but was it the same with Dees?

Anyway, I wouldn't get too carried away.

Yes, sorry, you're right. I just checked but had been sure we beat them at much-publicised return to Western Oval. Wrong! My memory must be fading. We actually only won the 1 game in NAB 2015, so this is potentially better if we deal with PA next game.

Overall, when you look at the results, it does bear out my contention. However, I've already posted elsewhere about the faster, play-on game-style and noticeably improved tackle-pressure against Hawks at least.

I HOPE your're right on this too though i.e. winning most early games. This has to be a major aim for Dimma!

We'll know in a couple of months, gents.

Does anyone know how many rotations we used against the Hawks???

Hopefully Lade does, Judge, but he's stopped posting since he got the senior gig.
