Some of my all time favourites on this list. American Beauty, Wrecking Ball and Red Dirt Girl are all on my desert island disc list. Dead are my favourite band and Emmylou my favourite female singer. I love her harmonies with others too. Hers and Gram Parsons' voices were made for each other. Just beautiful.

Leonard Cohen is another of the morbid variety, along with Lou Reed, who makes me feel good.

I haven't heard Nick Cave apart from on the Leonard Cohen "I'm your Man" dvd which I love. Must check his cds out too.

I love Pink Floyd and find more than most they are one band I listen to different cds depending on my mood and circumstances. I'd probably pick a different favourite each time I was asked.

Thanks for the replies. Certainly quite a few mentioned that I'll have a listen to if the opportunity arises. Gee I miss Gaslight when I go to the city. I wish there was a site like YouTube that had entire albums.

I'd be on the same desert island then, Rosy, providing I could bring along some Frank Zappa, maybe a bit of Gordon Lightfoot and Jim Croce and some Los Lobos. In fact, I'd need a trunk just for the CDs.

I just bought Nick Cave's album, kicking against the pricks, which is a collection of covers that one might consider him to be too cool to waste his time on. There are covers of two Johnny Cash songs, Hey Joe, By the time I get to Phoenix and he even has a go at The Carnival is Over by the Seekers.

Good stuff.

Could name quite a few... Although after a few drinks any song on the karaoke machine can become quite emotional.

And our singing gets better just don't ask the neighbours

Frank is welcome TOT. I sat in the front row, mid stage at one of his concerts back in the day. My ears have never been the same since. Have got some of his pretty coloured LPs somewhere around here. Haven't listened to them for yonks. Jim is always welcome. Gordon can come along too. I am not aware of Los Lobos but will check them out.

Bring your Nick Cave so I can have a listen. Would you recommend it for me as a good one of his to buy?

I don't travel far without Neil Young and Jackson Browne either. It would be a crowded island.

Azza am happy to send you a copy of the 2 Emmylou cds for you to try before you buy. Guess I'm old fashioned there though. I don't know how to find entire albums on the net let alone get them to my iriver thingo.

If you want a good sampler, the best of Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds is pretty good. I like the new one. even though the song choice is a bit left field for him, making it right field, it still works well.

Back in the day I was in a crowd at a Union Night at Melbourne Uni where we booed the Birthday Party (NC's first band) off the stage. Funny how taste changes.

Not necessarily my favorite songs, (besides the first two which are my fave ever) but stir plenty of emotions/memories, good and bad:

Fake Plastic Trees - Radiohead
Given to Fly - Pearljam
Lover you should've come over - Geoff Buckley
Hurt - Johnny Cash, cover of NIN song
New Slang - The Shins
Throw your arms around me - Hunters & Collectors
Everybody hurts - REM
I was only 19 - Redgum

As far as stirring the emotions, this song by Thunderclap Newman Something in the Air brings back memories of me as a very happy young Tiger. It was released in a time of Tiger greatness, & has always sat firmly in my heart. The revolutions here & it wears number 4

The other two albums that I forgot to mention are Warren Zevon's The Wind and the soundtrack of Dead Man Walking.

The Wind was recorded in the period after he found out that he had inoperable cancer and was released just before his death.
On that same theme I feel the same way about the last Queen album that they did with Freddie called Made in Heaven . Some of the vocals are padded by Roger Taylor because Freddie was so sick when it was being made and it wasn't released until 4 years after his death. The song "The show must go on " is so tinged with sadness because you can feel what Freddie must have thought when he sang it .

Apart from that any album that makes me feel young again . Led Zeppelin to remember I was a rocker at heart , Leonard Cohen to recall my insular reflective period :D

Some songs that transport me to another time and place...certainly not my favourite songs but I can't hear them and not be moved. I don't listen to them often.

Tequila Sunrise-Eagles
I'd spent a rainy Sunday arvo getting to know a new friend. It was his favourite song so I heard it a bit. I read in the Sun a couple of days later that he was found dead at Melbourne uni. Herion o/d.

Take me Home Country Roads-John Denver
I was working on a horse stud when I got the news my Grandma had died. She'd be one of my most respected women in the world. Raised 6 kids on her own in the depression. Such a lovely lady. I was advised by my family not to go home for the funeral. After hearing the news I was in the outside bathroom, an open stone room overlooking the mountains, and this song came on the radio. I had an overwhelming sense of home. Packed my bags and headed off straight away.

At Seventeen-Janis Ian
She was singing about my life at that time.

Birds-Neil Young
Ah the sadness of a teenager broken hearted in love.

Every *smile*ing city-Paul Kelly
I guess plenty of backpackers experience an occasional thought questioning why they're there. This is a very funny summary of that feeling. I can't help but smile and feel good when I listen to it.

Captain Beefheart - Safe as Milk, what a record. If you haven't heard it, get it and listen. Boogie rock/ blues/ punk from the late 60s, an innovator. Cruel Sea covered a few off this.

JJ Cale - Troubadour, and any JJ record. nice understated boogie blues.

Captain Matchbox Whoopie Band - Wangaratta Whahine. Swingin and funny record with a great Leunig drawn cover.

Hank Williams greatest Hits - briliant, happy, sad, fantasic

Tone Loc- Loc'ed after dark, Funky Cold medina, Wild thing and my favourite, Cheeba Cheeba.

NWA - Straight Outa Comptom, great stuff, energy jumps out

I'm an obsessive record collector, these are a few

I love Hank Williams.

Reading JJ's name made me head to You Tube to listen to Magnolia.

I'm sure I've heard Captain Beefheart, could even have an album or two hiding in my record collection, but can't recall what they sound like. Added to my checkout list.

I also have the Captain Matchbox record. Haven't listened to it for years. Think I had a bit of overkill at the time. Must dig it out one of these days.

If you're into Vinyl rosy get Safe As Milk online. You should be able to get it for $20-35. Trust me , you''ll be stirred.

I grew up with this song.

My dads favourite song. He used to play it all the time, and play it on the organ.

may have to youtube this song, haven't heard it in years.

Don't Believe Anymore - Icehouse
Here Comes the Flood - Peter Gabriel
Gone Away - Offspring

for various reasons.

Don't Give Up was good until trashed by Nollsy and the neighbours chick
These Days by Powderfinger was good also until flogged to death.

But the pick for me is Loveboat Captain by Pearl Jam

"Lost 9 friends we'll never know, two years ago today
And if our lives became too long, would it add to our regret?

And the young, they can lose hope cause they can't see beyond today,...
The wisdom that the old can't give away
Hey,...
Constant recoil...
Sometimes life
Don't leave you alone."

Doesn't get better than that (IMO)

Birds-Neil Young
Ah the sadness of a teenager broken hearted in love.

If you like Neil Young of that era Rosy have a listen to Live at Massey Hall from 1971 . It has just been discovered a few years ago and released and was the tour when he first played the songs from the Harvest album live . Old Man , Needle and the Damage Done , Heart of Gold etc. Its a really beautiful album with Neil at his best .

I love all music.

I listen to ALL types depending on mood.
When I get severely down on myself, the best remedy for me, is the heaviest metal I can lay my ears on like Cannibal Corpse or something like that.

Really pumps the self loathing out of me.

Decency Defied by Cannibal Corpse cranked to 11 on my headphones is like going to a doctor.

I love jazz ,electronic,Metal,Prog(especially 70s prog)

Love Frank Zappa,The Tubes,Little Feat,Tull,Genesis(Gabriel era)

I also love Slim Dusty.

Lights On the Hill and When The Rain Tumbles Down In July are classics.
Indian Pacific too and Pub With No Beer.

Mingus,Miles,Dave Brubeck,Dizzy.

Also love 70s rock like Doobie Brothers,Eagles.

Realy not much out there I don't like.

Love Orbital,Aphex Twin.

Love Kreator,Anthrax,Cannibal Corpse,Napalm Death.

Music is awesome!

Music is for the soul.

OIILLLLSSS and Celibate Rifles -*smile* YYEEAAAHH!

Nirvana,Sonic Youth,Smashing Pumpkins,Soundgarden,Alice In Chains,The Posies,The Pixies,Radiohead,Grizzly Bear,Sparklehorse,Granddaddy,Stereolab.

*smile* so much great music.

My 2 feel good songs that perk me up besides bashing my head to metal.

Love the quadraphonic album Mandingo.

Has african instruments done to rock.
Was a groundbreaking recording in 1973.

This song reminds me of Tigers looking for prey.
