I have never claimed Hampson is a very gifted or even capable footballer. But he actually tries near the best of his ability; has a real go generally. Cannot run that fast to catch and tackle much, but he's big and has a great jump. He makes his share of mistakes, not a canny footballer but you can see him trying to do what's needed to lift the team at times. His tap-work in the third quarter, in particular, was excellent often. Losing the clearances is a function of the whole midfield team, not merely the ruckman's tap. Geelong won the vital clearances when it mattered.
Hampson won more HOs (29) than Geelong's much-vaunted ruck stocks alone today Smith (13), Stanley (8), Blicavs (5). Note that without Griffiths, Hammer had next to no support - Vickery unbelievably not one HO, but staged for some frees superbly - Oscar Award. Griffiths is currently our only possible roving ruck/onballer type who may have countered combination of Stanley and Blicavs. More drafting failure.
