SBS AFL Story and St Kilda players sexual assault allegations [Merged]

1. these are allegations and no-one has been proven guilty yet.

2. If these allegations are true, I think there's a bigger victim here than the AFL.

Let's not hang anyone (or their club) before a determination is made regarding guilt. As I said earlier, some of these claims are made for reasons other than reporting a genuine assault.

Still, in any male-dominated endevour or institution, the risk of women become objectified and dehumanised wil always be real. It is a responsbility of all clubs and leagues to ensure that, as part of their standard player welfare packages, they provide their players with the strategies and knowledge to avoid or mitigate this situation. The views of women held by sportsmen is an issue that should be placed above even education about racial vilification.

The rugby league’s dramas stem from ALLEGATIONS too Harry but the Code is still reeling.

As you and I should know, the media’s treatment of sexual assault claims against public figures means allegations are all too frequently the means of undoing.

St Kilda held a news conference at 4pm and named the 2 players as Stephen Milne and Montagna.

How convenient- as soon as one team is believed to be involved in a rape allegation, in any sport, others come forward and claim they were also raped 'a few years ago'. I'm sure it must be a horrible thing to speak about but surely you would go to the police straight away, not 2-3 years later, when someone else brings it up?

struggletown, did the northern one you are talking about also play for an SA team. If that is so then I believe I know who it is as I have heard a story and currntly play against that player.
Yep. Gepps cross is it?
The other bloke got away with blue murder

(from www.afl.com.au)
St Kilda footballers Leigh Montagna and Stephen Milne are under investigation by Victoria Police over allegations of sexual assault.

The Brighton CIB is investigating claims by two women that they were assaulted by the pair at the home of one of the players last Sunday night.

The police investigation was revealed by St Kilda chief executive Brian Waldron at a media conference at Moorabbin on Tuesday.

Waldron said that the allegations are of a serious sexual nature, but that no charges have been laid against either player. He said it’s not known how long the police investigation may take.

Waldron stressed that both Milne and Montagna have fully cooperated with the police and have made full statements.

“They emphatically deny the allegations and are prepared to continue to assist the police in their inquiries,” he said.

“We ask that the reputations of these players be considered given that all we have are allegations. We ask the media and the public to respect the privacy of the players involved and to remember that a person is presumed innocent until proven otherwise.”

St Kilda has informed the AFL of the allegations and has undertaken to keep the AFL updated on any further information.

Both Milne and Montagna played significant roles in St Kilda’s final term charge to victory in last Saturday night’s Wizard Home Loans Cup final against Geelong.

Milne has kicked 103 goals in his 52 senior games for the Saints since being recruited in 2001. He signed a new three-year deal with the club in October 2003.

Montagna, a small forward and midfielder recruited from Northern Under-18’s as the number 37 pick overall in the 2001 National AFL Draft, has made 13 senior appearances for St Kilda.

He was a National Rising Star nominee last season.

One of those St. Kilda players has a long term gf and 2 kids. :(

Incident such as the alleged one here, happen at all levels of Football and in many aspects of general society each day. IMO it is surprising not more of these type of allegations have come to light over the years.

There are all types of people in this world. :-X

sorry didnt notice the second topic!
Is it sexual assault or rape?
If they are found guilty of rape they should be banned from AFL, I reckon

From what I have heard its a load of crap, the two girls invlved allegedly rang the 2 guys and told them to come over and then claim rape

seems suss to me id wait til we know more before commenting any more on it

Couldn't agree more Harry - well said.

Agreed WildTiger.

Frantic Saints fan ducked out of a meeting today to phone me and ask what had happened with this case.

When I told her it was Milne and Montagna she laughed, said it was *smile* and the AFL had nothing to worry about and hung up.

I don't feel so worried for the AFL's (or players') reputation after that I must say but will wait and see.

Incidentally scarecrow, rape= sexual assault (which also equals a range of other things depending on the terms of the legislation which varies between each State).

If either are both are found guilty of rape (and all we have are allegations at the moment) there will be an enforced holiday, don't worry. It's a bit hard to play from the inside of a cell.

However, I assume you mean a lifetime ban, which is a more difficult proposition. I'm not sure the league could take away a player's livelihood, especially after they have served their sentence under according to criminal law. Still, would any club sign them after such an offence, given the impact it could have on sponsorship and membership?

IDIOT PLAYERS!!

Why don't they put their flaming wicks back in the underpants & for chrissakes leave it there!!

Fair dinkum, how bloody naive and stupid can some blokes be.

Very, very good work by two insignificant pieces of Saint sh!t imo

Canb tiger - may offer you some word of advice??

Do not say disgusting downgrading things like that until there is any evidence that these players have done anything wrong!

Have you ever thought that some people that read or post on this board, may either know or be related to one of the players?? or Know their relatives?

These are only allegations, so keep the fkn stupid wankerish comments till IF they are found guilty.

Sport, in general, is the loser when these allegations come to light.

Likewise, victims of such actions are scarred for life.

Let's see what comes out of all this.

Did anyone watch the SBS program? I missed the first 15 minutes and the rest seemed to be a big debate amongst various people which didn't seem to solve anything. Noticed Maureen Hafey was one of the people in the audience. Wasn't the lady from Essendon really pushing what a wonderful family crowd they are at Essendon ::)

In all the kerfuffle, I actually feel sorry for Milne's partner and kids. After all, he has at least admitted to consensual sex with another woman.
