Thought I'd start a thread on Ryan as he seems a popular selection with many at 19 for the Tigers if he's still around.
Looks pretty handy in the vids but what do folks who've seen him up close think of him? Would he be a good selection?

In the Phantom Draft I was hinting to Skip to pick up Bastinac with Pick 19 seeing that all of the quality forwards had been taken. I hope that if this eventuates in the real draft that the Tigers do strongly consider him at 19. Would be the iceing on the cake for our midfield. Cotchin, Deledio, Martin, Foley, Bastinac.

The thing that appeals is that he appears to be genuinely dual sided and appears very skillful.
I know they're only highlights but you can see a real footballer here. I am surprised he hasn't been talked up more than he has tbh.

Bastinac is not one of my favourites.

Care to explain why? I saw his Champs game on FOX and he was not too bad at all. Would take him at #19 if available and if all the quality talls were gone. He seems to be similar in my eyes to Melksham, who would you take out of those two?

He just needs a bit more size and he will be a player.

Very good at clearances and is solid by foot. I like others more at 19 but we could do worse.

Yes, I've seen Bastinac a few times.

Saw him early in the season playing up forward in a medium pocket goal-kicking role. Saw him miss too many gettable shots.
As the season went on, I saw him playing an outside wingers role and found his kicking to be ok but iffy. Though he did better up the ground than he did closer to goal.
Bastinac played in a role similar to this throughout the season until the TAC GF when Scully got injured.
He did ok replacing Scully inside without dominating.

I see him as very similar to Jake Melksham of Calder.

Bastinac will certainly be picked up in the ND. May be as early as a late 1st round pick. Probably a 2nd or 3rd round pick.
But he's not one of my favourites.

What can I say.
I reckon Scully will probably be #1 in the ND, but he's not one of my favourites either.

Seen the Stingers quite a few times during the season.
Sometimes you have that connection with players, sometimes you don't.

Good observation, thanks for your thoughts.

I know how you feel when you follow some kids more closely and they don't get the kudos you think they deserve whilst others you have seen leave you scratching your head, yet some how get all the attention.

Can I have your thoughts on three specific guys I have been wanting a second or third opinion on?

A recruiting manager was telling me about Callum Bartlett as one to watch this year, what do you remember of him? What do you think of his potential?

Marcus Davies from Tassie.

Jason Tutt from ACT.

Heard we are pretty keen on the last two guys.

Haven't seen Callum Bartlett at all, so can't comment.

Marcus Davies is a sensationally high marking and dashing half back, but more often than not he'll sink the ball straight down the opposition's throat.

Like Tutt alot. Reminds me of Tony Free. A bp who can run on the ball. Better kick than Free too.

you're right. bastinac and martin are two of the draftees that i feel are genuinely dual sided. they have no hesitations with kicking on their opposite foot and often deliver beautifully. bastinac, though may not be as developed physically as others at this stage still goes in hard and wins his fair share of hardball gets and dishes out the handball no problems. i'd love it if we were able to get him at pick 19. deledio, cotchin, foley, cousins, martin, bastinac with tambling and collins helping out sounds good to me

What are your thoughts on him MM?

I like him alot. Unfortunately I am tipping him to go between 12 & 17 though so we may just miss out.

Reminds me a lot of Steele Sidebottom. Not quick but outstanding endurance and footy smarts combined with quality skills. He will be a 200 gamer imho. I rate him higher than the likes of Melksham, Moore, Gysberts and Sheppard who are all around the same mark.

based purely on the 1st 3:30 mins of the vid against wa, his kicking does look average.
happy to accept that might not be a representative sample.

Yeah, you can just see he has it.
I've only seen limited vision obviously but like Peggles says looks extremely comfortable on both sides of the body and is a fine disposer by hand as well.
I'm fully aware you shouldn't get sucked in by highlights but there's a piece of play at the 6min mark in that TAC GF clip that really highlights his skills. Great one touch pickup at full tilt then dummies left right left before centering to the goal square. He can play.

A couple of other highlights from Draft Camp

2nd in 3k time trial. 10.03mins
2nd in Beep Test. 15.1

No probs with playing midfield there.

Fair enough phantom. I respect your opinion as you've seen him first hand.

I noticed you have him around pick 50 in your phantom draft, however at the risk of being sucked in by the clips I expect he'll go well before that will play plenty of AFL footy. 8)

Interesting, an Ainslie boy who is the son of a club legend. Unless I've missed someone I think two of the last three Ainslie players to go onto AFL were James Hird and Nathan Buckley

FWIW some of the credible Phatom drafts I have seen on BF have him in the mix around the 40-65 mark. Burgatron has him there or later

Reckon that's a fair estimate.
