Russia Invades Ukraine

isnt it more the equivalent of the madman shooting a 3rd party, npt the guy getting in his face?

As far as i can tell NATO are being accused of provoking Putin, and Putin's response has been to invade a country that has been refused NATO membership?

Hard to argue against that logic. I'm sure David will have an explanation.

There are a lot of good points in this thread being made against russia.
Read the Matlock opinion piece. Geez, hard reading that, so pro Russian. Seems like the expression of a 70 year love affair with Russia, and good luck to him. Anne Applebaum the Polish born Pulitzer prize winning author, journalist and historian would contest much of what he said. NATO a threat to Russia? What a *smile* puddle deep joke. Democracy and liberal values are what nightmares are made of for leaders of authoritarian states.

Where does recognizing that Putin is a psychopathic murderer, a thug, a totally corrupt Godfather of a authoritarian state get us? Well, for one it’s a fact and facts are an important starting position in any discussion. To dismiss his psychopathy as just ‘name calling’ appears so dismissive and detached from reality that further debate is ultimately a waste of time.

It's a terrible piece in lots of ways - the most extreme aspect being he claims that Ukraine would not be invaded and it's all posturing by Biden to distract from domestic political concerns. Well that turned out well didn't it?

Clearly some prefer authoritarian rule., or simply dislike the west enough to blame them for Putin's actions.

An article from 2019 resonates here

With Facebook twitter and non approved media being blocked by Putin the general punter in Russia is being kept in the dark about the war in Ukraine.

They'll soon figure something bad is going down when they go to get a quarter pounder at McSh!t, because McSh!t has closed all of their 847 McSh!ts in Russia.

The world sure has gone mad, it was once the red-raggers from the left who were pro Russia, now it's the many, and rapidly becoming more and more from the right:unsure:

I guess thats what happens when you watch Foxnews, and Infowars.

The Ultra Left probably fits into this as well... John Pilger's article posted on this a while back was a good example ...

I used to think Pilger was Australia's Noam Chomsky, he's disappointed me ever since

It is like 2 guys in a bar. One of them continually gets in the face of the other so the one being provoked pulls out a gun and shoots him in the head.
On the other hand.
If you're gunna stand there pushin at n provokin the *smile* out of some poor bastard sittin in a bar n mindin his own business. Ya got no right to complain if he gets up n kicks the *smile* out of ya.

More like you're at the bar and things are going well with a chick you're chatting up in the corner. The "poor" bastard at the bar gets jealous and stabs you in the eye with an umbrella. It makes no sense and the action totally out of proportion no matter how he tries to justify it.

At the end of the day one superpower had it's red line crossed and did something about it. The other superpower would have done the same.

McDonalds closing in Russia. Blessing in disguise for them really. If only they can close everywhere else.

Tell it to Vietnam, a dirt-poor, underdeveloped country. The Vietnamese fought the might of the US military from 1955 to 1975, suffering carpet bombing, napalm, and lost around 1.5 million civilians and military personal. They never gave up.

Your advice would have been "just roll over guys, you can't possibly win this"

China and Cambodia both had a crack at Vietnam while they were occupied by America.

they fought them all off concurrently.

think about that, and you begin to grasp,

how selfless, organised and tough the Vietnamese people are,

and what a leader Ho Chi Mihn was.

Vietnamese hatred of China is pretty intense.

I think they get on alright with Russia though?; Moscow literally does a full restoration on Uncle Ho's embalmed body every few years

I was thinking,

Wouldn't Putin be absolutely ideologically stoked and vindicated,

that Maccas, Netflix, Disney, Married at First Sight, Visa, PopTarts, Spotify and Botox Drivethru Mega World,

have all left his country?

doesn't he want to put everyone in brown hessian, with a furry black hat and feed them Borscht,

while they sing Калникна, warming their fingers around a pungent pile of smouldering Siberian pony biscuits?

its a good time to re-read the truly wonderful A day in The Life of Ivan Denisovich

Yes well obviously those pesky pregnant mothers and babies must have crossed Vlad's red line so he's started bombing maternity hospitals. Those babies must have really provoked Vlad. What choice did he have but to bomb them into oblivion. Who needs hospitals anyway.

He really is quite a guy Vlad. No wonder the Ukrainians all love him and his peace keeping forces. Imagine how much money they will all save without having to pay for the upkeep of hospitals. More vodka for all!

Or maybe just more money in Vlad's pockets? Another dacha or two?
