Round 9 - Other games

Ratten is a breath of fresh air. I dig his honesty. Just goes to show what a bag of knobs the Carlton FC is.

On the incorrect disposals, SHocking was there on the sidelines looking smug. Probably rallying his umpires and thinking of his final rule changes that will benefit the codgers. Much conflict of interest if he decides to take the c*nts top job?

The man on the mark rule (apart when your going for goal, which looks ridiculous) hasn't changed the game.
He has instructed the umpires to give Geelong a lot mor time with the ball. When they taking a kick they seem to have 20 minutes to kick it and all of sudden they have become the new Geelong that seem to play on at every opportunity. Because they have been told holding the ball wont be paid as often.
Bews, Atkins, Tvouy, Guthrie and even Menolga play on more now then ive seen in the last 4-5 years.
To have a fast game style shouldn't mean your immune to the decisions of the game.
Its hard to watch.

**Hayden Kennedy said on the Front Bar that he wasn't sure what he will do next. This retirement wasn't planned.
Sam even said 'Shouldn't you have planned something before you quit?'

So...it is now completely clear.
Despite the rules, the directive from Hocking is this..
Tackling is not to be rewarded.
AFL no longer want a tackling game, rather, want a constant moving game and will allow ANY ball disposal
including no disposal, to permit the ball to come out and continue ball movement.

This will be why Kennedy quit. He could not accept Hockings directive that the rules of the game be over ridden .
And I guarantee you Cats were aware of this while others were not.
Now we all know...saw it vSaints and v Tigers.

Rotten correct...tackling no longer wanted by afl.
Of course this has removed Tigers one wood!

No way out...Tigers have to change game.
Explains Cats recruiting of Smith and Cameron...perfectly suited. And why SHiggins ok at his age and pace.
Makes our pressure style far less effective.

Very deliberate afl/ Hocking plan....not revealed to community pre season!
What a joke of an old boys league. Disgraceful.

And learn to pick the ball up off the ground when he’s 40 metres in the clear. The hype does not match the reality. It may one day I guess but even at this stage of his career he’s gotta be better than he was tonight. Probably cost them the game with his errors.

He could have even tapped it on towards Membrey who was free.

How bad was Butler’s attempted soccer goal late in the game? That’s the sort of *smile* he does that shows me why I don’t miss him.

Looked to me like he didn't want the contact that taking possession would have meant. Soft

One of the jurnos just asked Ratten 'did you see the throws"
Ratten was really careful in answering it. 'I didn't say it, you said it, is that the way they disposed of the ball. Thats disappointing"
Where the *smile* was that question last week?

That Journo obviously wasn't "AFL approved". The SHocking mafia will have him suspended from future pressers to ensure that he doesn't veer away from the "company line".

Not rewarding the tackler actually slows the game down

Jeez the Saints botched that.

*smile* me, how good would it be to play for Geelong. Throw the ball whenever you want, tackle your opponent before he takes the footy and then when you get tackled, drop it into the lap of your teammate. Cheats.

The Saints with their C-grade midfield reminded us that with Chimp and Dion (and Lambo) back in the side we're a different kettle of Tigers for the pussies. Can't wait to *smile* them in September again. Hate the cheats.
There is no such thing as holding the ball when tackling a Geethrow player. It’s just play on.

The rules are as you say when it comes to Geelong and their opponents, but not so clear for others. The fact that this bloke controls football is a travesty and there seems little doubt that Kennedy resigned because of it.
Hopefully St Gill gives him a hiding over Monday's first coffee.

Liked your post until I got to the bit about Gil. You think he isn't in on it; on all that is going on?

Like ripping up the clubs sponsorship deals with United Petroleum? For the US multinational ($$$$)!? Like inferring that DRioli and Bolton were at fault at Yoyo.

That he hasn't given SHocking his imprimatur to "Stop Richmond! You must deliver another final flag to Geesook! It was meant to be 2020 for Gazza's farewell. And Chris, Duckwood, Danger and all the other good old boys deserve it. Besides, anyone but those bloody tigers. Gotta spread the flags around to garner wider, higher sponsorship, grow the game, make the 'product' more attractive, ... llike basketball (and boost my bonus ... shoosh about that!)"

26 games in, being a bit harsh. His stats this year are very similar to Lynch's. I think he's trending very well. Sure he had the yips kicking for goal, that's just confidence. Likely also still building his stamina. Positions himself well and is 7th for contested marks. Not many of his size were doing this well in their 2nd season. Would love a King at the Tigers.

Have a look the crowds?
The crowds are back to the late 80's.

Tried to have a look at the crowds, but can't find last night's attendance anywhere.

Crowds are well down and none of the media are willing to talk about it. It ain't the lower capacity as no games have gone near the capacity limits.

Yep, hard to believe after tonight. Kicking for goal is a forward's means of making a living; their 'bread and butter.' It's like a carpenter hitting nails with a hammer; a surgeon being able to cut along the marked line with the scalpel. This is your job. You get highly paid to do it.
You are a professional who can practice it for hour after hour, and should. Set-shots especially. You must have honed the technique that works for you.

That includes the mental preparation and discipline along with the ball control. Don't make it out to be harder than it is. In the words of the inimitable Keith Miller, famous test cricket all-rounder and Battle of Britain fighter pilot, when reporters asked about the pressure of scoring runs:

" You call that pressure! That's not pressure. Having a Messerschmidt hot up your ars trying to shoot to pieces ... that's what I call pressure!"
(Or words to that effect)

I watched a couple of minutes of the VFL game about an hour ago. Sampson Ryan lines up for goal, holds the ball up to line up with the goals, no spinning the ball, holds it in position and slots a goal. Watching old games look at how Royce Hart holds the ball still and deliberately. I just get the impression that forwards are not being taught a set procedure to kick for goal. Spinning the ball around makes it harder to have a reliable position of hand and ball drop before kicking. I don't get it, more set shot practice for forwards seems a no brainer. It has to be good practice too, what was it Barassi said years ago - Practice doesn't make perfect, perfect practice makes perfect.

As for the tackling. They are clearly trying to change the game. Incorrect disposal is fundamental to Australian Football. If they want the ball to just get pushed around without stoppages or free kicks then it is not the game we know and love. It becomes some sort of rolling scrum and I really can't see that engaging the fans. Time to enforce the rules to clean up the game, not enforcing the rules is making the game messier. The AFL simply don't seem to care what fans think, which is incredibly stupid as without fans there is no AFL.

Poor Lolingwood. Goes to show what a failure Daddy Long Legs was. Just an actor from the US. This team is so shithouse they can't even play him. Goodbye Figgy. Just 14 weeks left.

They have a lot of players that don't like going for the hard ball and just skirt around packs hoping for a cheap disposal. No wonder they can't control territory.

Yeah, noticed that 7 don’t replay the dodgy decisions, either. That’s got to be a directive from AFL House.
