only 4 teams have gone back to back in 30 years. its bloody hard. And they will have to get past us to do it.

I'm bloody wrapped for him.

i wouldn’t say I am sh!tting myself, but you are kidding yourself if you think this game will be a walk in the park. It will be a very tricky game and we won't have it all our own way.

Additionally, I think we need to get off to a good start this year as we have a bit of a tricky draw early on. I don’t think we have the depth to leave our run late like we did in 2019 and 2020. We need to be 7-4 or 8-3 at the midway point IMO.
Walk in the park.
3 good players vs 16 good players

I reckon grimes will play. That leaves a replacement for Vlastuin. Think it will be out of Gibcus and Brown.

Not sure Graham will get to the line with no games. I think they know what they get with Pickett and were looking at what Ross and Aarts offer through pre season - think they will go with one or the other.

I go Pickett as a starting winger - purely because of his hurt factor and running capacity. Nobody wants to line up on him.

My side:

Gibcus. Tarrant. Broad.
Rioli. Grimes. Short.
McIntosh. Martin. Pickett.
Edwards. Balta. Bolton.
Riewoldt. Lynch. Baker.

R. Nankervis, Cotchin, Prestia.

I. Soldo, Ralphsmith, Ross/Aarts, Castagna.
I think Gibcus plays regardless of what happens with Grimes.

What have you heard about Brown DA?
I’m hearing he’s a smokey for Rd1 or not far away from senior selection.
Highly rated but my point is we know Stack can really play. If he’s not fit now after a full preseason, or not fitter or better than a first year recruit, then I begrudgingly concede he’s probably gone, despite Hardwick and Riewoldt recently pumping him up for his efforts.
Disappointing situation.

That’s a massive call by the club.
But shouldnt be a surprise Red. He has played in every practice game. Its just a question of who he lines up against? Is it Curnow or De Koning? I suspect he will be taking De Koning. Grimes (if fit) or Broad take Curnow.

Yeah but it’s not like other positions on the ground where you largely can contribute your level of first game output and that’s that eg wing, on ball or whatever. He’ll be isolated on an experienced opponent down back and we’ll be making a more defined pass or fail judgement as a result. That’s big time exposure, pressure and scrutiny on him.

We did a similar thing with Samson by throwing him in there with limited experience and isolating his performance against the Saints. That didn’t go so well. And Samson had played a number of VFL games. Josh has next to nothing behind him going into a one on one role be it on Curnow, De Koenig, McKay or whoever.

Hope he goes ok. Maybe he will. But it’s a big risk/ask given the situation.

Judging by Grimes training today where he was marking everything in sight without problem, I’d guess he’s a near certainty to play.

Based on @caesar training report today, this is how I think we line up.

FB: Grimes Tarrant Broad
HB: Short Gibcus Rioli
C: Aarts Martin Ross
HF: Edwards Balta Baker
FF: Bolton Riewoldt Lynch
Foll: Nankervis Prestia Cotchin
Int: Castagna Graham Ralphsmith Soldo
Sub: Pickett
Emerg: Miller, Sonsie, Mansell, Stack

Unavailable - Lambert, Vlastuin, Macintosh

Personally I would opt for Pickett over Aarts on the wing but pre-season indicates that Aarts is ahead in the selection queue.

Strange one Aarts over Pickett... Ah well, all we can do is hope Dimma is right
