Rookies for 2013

Sam Colquhuon and Shane Nelson are both very likley types. It would be nice to take at least one of these two boys.

Sam has been invited to train with Port, I don't think we'll get the opportunity to be honest but Shane Nelson deserves a chance, I'm all for giving him a rookie spot.

Would like Calquhoun, Rodda or Tipungwuti.

Calquhoun for his kicking descision making.

Rodda - wouldn't mind him just from the point of having a replacement ready in 2 years time when Grimes hammies go for their 5th or 6th time.

Tipungwuti - Probably the one I would like to see make the rookie list.

19 yo indigenous kid that made the move down south years ago & has already settled in.
Biggest issue will be the tank but just too much talent rolled into that kid not to gamble.

In my opinion this is exactly who we should be targeting.

Tom Sherridan seems to have struggled with the step up. His performances in the U18 championships was a little under welming as a junior too, but Tommy Schneider has done very well at VFL level, and very well in NAB cup. I'd love to see how he'd go given an opportunity. His attitude towards the ball would certainly not leave you wondering.

The boy Schneider looks promising for a couple of reasons:
1. Possibly a short development lead up time to AFL footy; he may impact within 2 years.
2. We need more genuine midfielders.

Port can have Colquhoun.

I don't want to stigmatise the kid, but I was at a draft function in Perth when the ND was on, and the talk was that scouts felt he didn't have the physical side to his game required at AFL level.

Maybe that's how he was instructed to play, with his skills I'd definitely give him a chance, not much to lose as a rookie IMO.

I saw a few North Ballarat and St Pat's games and one who impressed me enough was Nick Rippon. He is small, but he a pure footballer with his ability to play both inside and out. Kicking skills are average to good. If they where elite I have no doubt he would have been picked up.

I'd be disappointed if he didn't get selected. Fantastic kid who is a pure footballer who just lacks the dimensions.

Tommy Schneider , Shane Nelson, Sam Colquhoun or Andrew Boston.

Want two of those four.

Yes, Nelson likely, Schneider should get picked up somewhere, Colquhon to go to an Adelaide club.

Boston might go to Lions but would love him and Nelson at Richmond - we would have great midfield depth especially if Foley isn't right at the start of the season.

The below article on Andrew Boston on the day of the ND, kid seemed certain to get picked up so can anyone give some insight to why he didn't.....

QUEENSLAND'S top prospect, Andrew Boston, looks certain to be heading to Melbourne to start his AFL career.

And the dedicated 18-year-old from Broadbeach will welcome the opportunity.

Barring a major shock, Boston will be picked up in tonight's National Draft on the Gold Coast, possibly somewhere in the second or third rounds.

Richmond, which holds selections 32, 34, and 43, is the frontrunner for his services.

Boston, 182cm, and 75kg, said yesterday he was "pretty nervous", but, "still pretty confident it is going to happen ... it's just a matter of when."

"There's been a few clubs contacting my manager (Tim Batty, of Velocity Sports), just saying they're interested and stuff like that.

"I don't really have a preference, but I wouldn't mind going to a Melbourne club, the atmosphere down there is awesome."

The son of former Broadbeach Cats coach Neil Boston, Andrew said "all I ever wanted to do was play AFL", and he this year made sure he was going to give himself the best possible chance.

Putting work on the backburner, Boston has trained six days a week.

"At the start of the year dad and I had a talk and we decided if we wanted to have a really good crack at it we'd take this year off, train like you're at an AFL club so when you get there nothing's changed," he explained.

It looks like it will pay dividends.

While putting in a number of eye-catching displays for Broadbeach in the NEAFL, he was also named in the All-Australian under-18 line-up after a sensational national under-18 carnival in July.

But, Boston was not about to rest on his laurels and worked closely with former Brisbane Bears and now Broadbeach Cats fitness advisor Gary Fox.

While an immensely skilful half-forward who can run through the midfield, Boston's endurance needed work, Fox said.

"That was the deficiency that we recognised early on," Fox said.

"We planned that after his Queensland commitments finished we would work pretty hard on his fitness between then and the draft combine (in October)."

Aware he would need to run a decent 3km to further impress club recruiters, Fox said "we had to make sure he knew how to pace himself, run a bit more intelligently".

One of five Queenslanders invited to attend the combine at Melbourne's Etihad Stadium - along with Jordon Bourke (Morningside), Aliir Aliir (Aspley), Brian Coleman-Broome (Morningside) and Clay Cameron (Mt Gravatt) - Boston would record a mid-field time of 11min 11sec for the 3km.

It was his kicking ability though that would shine, and ultimately make him all but a shoo-in to be drafted.

Boston went down in history as the first to register a perfect score in the newly introduced goalkicking test, which includes having five shots at different angles and distances.

"I've always loved kicking goals," he said.

Boston plans to head down to the Gold Coast Convention and Exhibition Centre tonight "to have a look" at draft proceedings, "and hopefully hear my name read out".

The GWS Giants have the first three picks, and will take Victorian Lachie Whitfield at No.1.

Fellow Queenslander Clay Cameron has already been chosen by the Gold Coast Suns at 60 as a Queensland Zone selection, while Jordon Bourke is also a very strong chance to be picked.

Always happy to read about someone with great kicking skills!

One of the morning papers has reported that PA has committed to Colquhuon in the PSD.

Shame.

Would round out a reasonable effort by Port in picking up some quality youngsters. I don't understand how Colquhon got looked over.

AA defender who can run all day and kick well. Staggering.

Need to get Shane Nelson and Sheridan.

Agree, was the shock of the draft IMO. I'm just wondering why he's suddenly training with Essendon or was that a bogus rumour? And Prismall, what's happened to him? It's all very confusing because Hird was on record as saying Prismall would definitely be picked up, and along comes Garlett and a few others. It sounds like the Bumbers have done the dirty on Brett because they saw some potential in the trash and treasure bin, typical of their backstabbing ways.

Committed to taking 4 rookies next week, that's good news.

I would definitely use our PSD pick, with the talent available why would we deliberately downgrade our drafting position? For the sake of a one year salary it simply doesn't make sense, particularly if we are looking at picking up a junior.
