Rob Wiley interview

The '74 Grand Final was a real battle between those 2. Greig was the Brownlow medalist but we all know KB should have won. I may be biased but I reckon Wood was much better than Greig in that game.

DS
Yes David, there was a lot of angst between the teams because of Greig winning the Brownlow in 74, apparently some words exchanged between officials at the count. Looking at the votes, Greig won with 27 votes, Gary Hardeman was 2nd with 23 votes, KB 3rd with 22 votes, Gary Dempsey 4th with 19 votes and equal 5th with 15 votes were Leigh Matthews, Francis Bourke and Rex Hunt. I didn't know Rex had such a good year!
Fun fact: Keith Greig polled 27 votes in his Brownlow winning years of 1973 & 1974 and wore #27!

That ‘82 side was seriously stacked with talent and could turn it on with electrifying bursts.

In the Round 22 game against North, we were 5 goals down halfway through the 3rd quarter, then hit the warp speed button to be a couple of goals in front by the end of the term. A 7 goal turnaround in half a quarter :eek:

Rawlings' and Wiley with Raine's and rioli in 1982 was just about our best Foursome midfield ever.

Watched the whole thing, remember listening to it on the radio having missed it for some reason. Would've been one of Emmett Dunne's very best games, Andy Preston mentioned earlier was important in the second half and Weightman & Roach were deadly on the run. Wiley didn't have much influence. Blight was still a star at 32, Dench flogged Taylor and Glendenning showed the form that won him a Brownlow the next year. Dempsey, Greig, Abernethy and the Krakouers rounded out a pretty good team.

Such entertaining games were more common back then.

Absolutely Tass. We could explode very quickly and kick bunches of goals. Great memories of an old suburban ground. Arden Street was always pretty good to get a decent spot to watch from in comparison to Vic Park or Windy Hill.

Went to the first game against North at the G round 1 that season, I don't think it's on Youtube unfortunately. Another great win late in the game as I recall, but Jimmy and Phil were killing it, you could see their talent in their first game for the Roos. Good times.

North always had lots of stars. Some absolute talent among that list!

I reckon that whilst it was Round 1, the Roos game was actually our second game of the season, as we played Fitzroy at Waverley the week before. The VFL brought forward our Round 2 match to kick off the season early, can't remember why. I just remember it was the first time I saw Maurice play live!

I remember that day clearly Oz. I was sitting in the right forward pocket at the RFC cheer squad end. What stuck out that day and in hindsight post the GF loss, was that we were top heavy up forward. Cloke got destroyed by Glendining that day. As soon as we took him off and replaced him with the more agile Shane Williams, we got back into the game.

Agree Tass. Strangely enough we may have had too much tall talent that year. Up forward, we had Disco, BT, Clokey and the Ghost and General at times. We experimented with the General up forward and Disco in the ruck at times.
I felt we were a bit slow in the backline also with Al Martello, Emmett, Strachany and the Ghost. Maybe didn't quite get the balance right.

That’s right Ant. The round 2 game against Fitzroy was a stand alone game to kick off the season at VFL park
Yes, went to that game. Was a beautiful warm March day.

I can remember in the mid 80s when Peake was (according to the West Aussies) the best player in the land, they played a State game between W A & the Vics at VFL Park.
He played on the wing & his opponent was Robbie Flower who gave him an absolute football lesson. It was beautiful to watch.
Robbie Flower was one of the best footballers I have ever seen. Used to go to a lot of Melbourne games with a close mate in those days and he was just a joy to watch.
What a player, just about my favourite ever non Richmond footballer.
