Rob Wiley interview

One of Merv's looked like a bit of a helicopter but it sailed through anyway.

Cloke also went for a bit of a stroll and kicked a long goal after a couple of bounces in the 3rd quarter.
It did! Big Clokey could have kicked 9 or 10 given the ones he missed!

Weren't we right into Stephen Michael as well but he would never come over?
I am sure you are right Ridley. I went to type his name after Michael Aish and then questioned my memory! He played with Maurice at South Freo and we had a connection through Mal Brown, who was coaching them. The people who watched Stephen Michael regularly reckon he would have been an absolute gun in the VFL back in the late 70s/early 80s.

I think from memory it may have been Geelong that Stephen Michael was perennially linked to...

Your brother is a fine judge MB78! As a kid, I used to read about all of the interstate players we were chasing, it was very exciting to follow. Some like Rob and Maurice came over to us, some like Michael Aish kept us crossing our fingers!
It seemed like Michael Aish was coming "next year" for about 5 years in a row!

I reckon it was both us and the Cats linked to Stephen Michael. They were also into Brian Peake and got him over in the early 80s. Peake was ok, but didn't live up to the hype.

Haha, yes it did seem like the same story every year. I remember following the Norwood scores and watching the Grand Finals on the ABC when Balmey was coaching them in the early 80s and keeping a keen eye on Michael Aish, our 'future Tiger!'.

Geelong supporters did give Peake a great nickname. "Pasties".

Pasties Peake :rotfl2 :mhihi

Just googled him, he kicked an amazing 566 goals from 292 games, incredible for someone who spent a lot of time roving, and he finished runner-up B & F in our Premiership year of 1980.

Haha, yes Pasties got trotted out a lot back then! Interesting that he was 27 when he went to Geelong, played 4 years and then went back and played another 6 years in the WAFL.

Spot on Tigerman. He had great goal sense, kicked so many ripper goals for us and I imagine for Perth also. He tells the story on the podcast about one day when he kicked 10 goals and his Dad told him that he didn't play very well!

I can remember in the mid 80s when Peake was (according to the West Aussies) the best player in the land, they played a State game between W A & the Vics at VFL Park.
He played on the wing & his opponent was Robbie Flower who gave him an absolute football lesson. It was beautiful to watch.

I reckon that would have been 1980 TT (last time a State of origin match was played at VFL Park). What a beautiful player Robbie Flower was, so much skill and poise.

I think you're right Ossie, on both counts.
Flower was a terrific player, Kieth Grieg & Doug Hawkins were other opposition "wing men" who were pretty good too.

Hey TT, all 3 of those guys were classic wingers. I remember Bryan Wood having some epic battles with Keith Grieg. Keith's son Matthew was a supp list player with our reserves in the late 90s.

The '74 Grand Final was a real battle between those 2. Greig was the Brownlow medalist but we all know KB should have won. I may be biased but I reckon Wood was much better than Greig in that game.
