Pick 14, Wayne Peters, famous for being matched up on Gary Ablett on the wing at the MCG the day he kicked 14 against us.

Yes, I really liked watching Wayne Peters when he first played.

I recall he was a skinny 6'2", which in those days was tall for a wingman. He ran really well. His kicking was a bit ordinary but that was 'par for the course' at Tigerland in those days.
But he could kick a goal on the run.

I remember that game.
Bartlett played that skinny 20yo kid up against Ablett at the peak of his career. Broke the kid's heart & his body.
Bartlett could have used a more experienced player, Poole or Egan on Ablett but didn't.

Ablett physically went to town on Peters. Everytime Peters touched the ball, Ablett hit him.
Bartlett never moved him.
Peters went home, I think to SA, after that.

That game Bartlett lost me as Richmond coach.

There might be another side to the story but that's how I saw it as a spectator.

Gary senior's record against us was unbelievable . Kicked 10 or more a few times as I recall .

Peters really looked a player you are right . There was a question asked in an earlier post whether Peters went to Fitzroy after richmond , is that correct ?

Could be.

Sounds familiar but not sure.

Peters played a beautiful game against the Blues on that famous night when Peter Wilson did his cartwheels, skinny but certainly had talent.

You aren't thinking of Chris Pym are you?

yeah, it was Pym, kicked 3 from the wing and Flea picked up 40 possesions. Great night, one of the best in a dark period.

Was that the game Honybun played in the ruck?

Thanks guys, I found the answer.

Peters was picked up by Fitzroy in the 1991 PSD after he had played with us.

I believe so, we also played Mark Lee but I recall Honybun matching it comfortably with Justin Madden. Amazing to think that Honybun stood at a meagre 195cm and still won a fair share of hitouts.

Anyone remember the star no:8 Toddy Menagola

I recall Todd being a part of the youth brigade alongside of Jamie Tape, Matty Rogers and the great Paul Bulluss. Can't remember any standout performances apart from a match against the Cats at Kardinia, seemed a bit timid from memory.

Loved Jamie Tape . Not the most gifted player but full of G&D . Absolute tragedy what happened to him .Is this Seb Tape in the draft any relation to Jamie ?

There was a rumour about Lounder (not sure if true or not) that he had missed a few training sessions and noone could get a hold of him. A couple of people from the club went to the house he was living in, to find him sitting in a chair in only his undies, watching tv with empty beer cans strewn across the loungeroom floor.

I remember going to a seconds game at the Lake Oval and seeing him up close at the 1/4 time huddle. He was huge.

BTW, I believe his first game he played mainly on John Law. the height difference was considerable. no wonder he kicked 4 goals.

I heard that snippet too, my version there was a family pizza box on the floor in front of him

martyn tried spoiling Lounder at one point when he marked and goaled.

I was there that day. .

I was a fan of Tape as well, lovely set of hands and a great football brain. Probably fell by the wayside when the game became a lot quicker, his physique was that of an old school footballer, much like Lance Whitnall who also lost some impact as time went on. As for Seb, I don't believe they are related but somebody may have information to the contrary.

I was too. from memory we got out to about 80 points in front during the last quarter before the Roos reduced the margin back to about 6 goals. Something like 18 goals kicked in the last quarter. I think that was the same game.

Different matches, the one you are thinking about was when Daffy was on fire and we kicked the first 6 or 7 goals. The Lounder debut match was at the MCG and we got flogged, I recall Lounder getting faint praise at the time but I was unimpressed even with his 4 goal haul. He hardly moved that day, just plucked a few lucky grabs and slotted goals from 10 metres out. I think he touched the ball 4 or 5 times for the whole match so the goals scored is particularly flattering.

I know the Daffy game...that was the Monday nighter in 1995. There was definately an afternoon game in the late 1980s where what I said occurred...I was guessing whether it was the Lounder game, but probably wasn't. I will have to try and dig it up...
