Yeah he did. Played him continually at Richmond when his form didnt warrant it in his early days.

Inspird stuff from KB as it turns out.

Yes, some of you may remember the oldest Bowden boy. What was his first name again? Sean?
Touted as a future RFC captain at the SOS presentation at the MCG back in 1989.

And he had excellent ability as a junior. As a junior, better than Joel.

Same thing, bad leg injury, poor medical attention, retired prematurely due to no recovery.
don't think your quite right about Sean..I played footy and cricket with him and he wasn't that good..more a matter of him getting in front of the right people at the right time...

There was a rumour about Lounder (not sure if true or not) that he had missed a few training sessions and noone could get a hold of him. A couple of people from the club went to the house he was living in, to find him sitting in a chair in only his undies, watching tv with empty beer cans strewn across the loungeroom floor.

I remember going to a seconds game at the Lake Oval and seeing him up close at the 1/4 time huddle. He was huge.

BTW, I believe his first game he played mainly on John Law. the height difference was considerable. no wonder he kicked 4 goals.

This is true, he towered over Law and took a few marks because he was just soo much talller. Make no mistake, injury or no injury, Lounder was a class A spud.

& with Benny he was absolutely hopeless at the time of his drafting.

Was playing reserves for Burnie & not getting a kick. Unlike Michael who was a gun junior who played in a senior premiership for Penguin at 18.

No question that his old mans football prowess (Don "Butch" Gale was an all Australian) & as well as his elder brother's was a if not the key factor in his drafting.

& to think that his drafting is having bigger ramifications than ever now & in the future.
Benny's Dad was Don Gale from Tassie but wasn't Butch the ex fitzroy ruckman Allan Gale who later commentated with Mike Williamson on Channel 7 ? Different Gales I think , no relation to Benny and Michael.

Would have liked to have seen what would have happened if KB had kept coaching.

Another great what if. That should be a thread over summer, "Richmond great what ifs....."

The thing I remember most when watching Lounder's first game was that he could not jump, I don't think his feet ever left the ground. He was a man mountain that was hard to match up on but that was about it.

Yes Allan was Butch Gale. Quite right no relation.

The late Don was sometimes Butch to us, sometimes Donny when he drove us annoying young fella's round in his cab back home. & Michael was/is always termed as Butch or Butchy. Confused. ;D

Don made All Aus team from the North West Football Union in Tas. First to do so.

Recruiting was certainly hit and miss in those days. Brendan Gale was a great pick up though , good career and now our CEO .

We had a few failures around that time as well as Lounder . Banik at Pick 1 played 40-50 underwhelming games and we also picked up a guy by the name of Wayne Peters for a very high pick as I recall who did virtually nothing as well.

Benny also led us to pick up Michael I imagine. As for Banik while he may not have been worth no. 1 wasn't he crueled by injury?

My sister-in-law dated Lounder. Describes him as a lazy, chainsmoking, pizza-loving, uncoordinated git who couldn't catch a tennis ball lobbed at him.

To be fair, that description would be used by thousands of ex-girlfriends about their ex-boyfriends.

Sounds like a messy breakup. Were they tennis balls beign thrown at him or pots n pans he couldn't catch?

I think you are right that injuries eventually brought him undone. It may have been chronic fatigue syndrome.

He was the original Dustin Martin- a boy in a man's body. Unfortunately he never really improved that much as he got older.

Edit: Was referring to Banik rather than Gale!!!

Wasnt a star but a bloody good wingman was Butch. Dont get to 196 games if your a battler.
He actually started off extremey skinny, was the polar opposite of a Martin clone when he started at Fitzroy. But did a stack of work in the gym in an era where it wasnt big.

Was very quick over short distances to go with his strength. Excellent one-on-one which was needed to play wing in the day. Footskills were so-so. But it wasnt such an issue then as now.

Did have a lot of injury problems in his later years. But played some bloody good footy for us when he first came across when we played decent footy under Swooper.

My bad Leysey, my post above was referring to Banik rather than Gale.

i agree, Gale was very good for us, particularly early on.

We had some strong bodied footballers back in the Swooper days. Another example was Maxfield.

Banik was cruelled by Glandular Fever which later became chronic fatigue syndrome (IIRC). He was never the same after that.

Thats right but he was never really up to it , certainly not as a Number 1 pick . I remember his first game when he lined up on Paul Hudson in his first game as well at the hawks . Number 1 pick against Peter Hudson's son was big news .

Just after that when KB was coaching we brought in Free , Lambert , Knights and Campbell and should have ended up with a gun midfield for a decade but somehow it never came to pass. Stewie Maxfield as well .

Ah, no stress lucky Phil.
