Recruited from: Central Districts (SANFL)
Club: Richmond
Games: 4
Draft pick: 1

Career achievements
The Tigers had high hopes when they drafted man-mountain Richard Lounder with the first pick in what was just the second-ever national draft in 1987. But after a promising start to his VFL career, Lounder would play just three more matches to finish with a career total of four.

From Central Districts in South Australia, the ruckman stood an imposing 203cm and weighed 116kg. On debut against North Melbourne at the MCG, he spent much of his time forward and the Roos struggled to combat his sheer size. Lounder booted four goals and looked a player, but as he worked 40-hour weeks and struggled with homesickness, he wasn't able to produce his best.

Lounder returned to South Australia after just two seasons in Melbourne, and slowly drifted out of football.

too young to have any idea who this guy is. its prob better that way. another RFC epic fail.... sorry ;D

My recollection of events surrounding Lounder was that he played a very good first up game against North, in a FP, kicking about 4 goals.

He hurt his ankle in the next game against Carlton.

The RFC, in dire financial trouble, told him to seek his own medical advice & treatment.

He didn't know what to do and played on for a couple more games with the bad ankle.

His parents, back in SA, then took charge and immediately ordered their son back home.

Lounder is more an indictment on the merits of the RFC, at the time, than Lounder himself.

I've heard Bartlett, his then coach, corroborate this story.

I've heard Bartlett also say that he, personally, had to buy the medicine balls for the players to do their gym training when he was coach.

It certainly puts the Lounder jibes and jokes into some kind of perspective. Seems he was recruited at the wrong time to the wrong club. Certainly will say something the next time someone talks of him as the quintessential dud.

Yes, some of you may remember the oldest Bowden boy. What was his first name again? Sean?
Touted as a future RFC captain at the SOS presentation at the MCG back in 1989.

And he had excellent ability as a junior. As a junior, better than Joel.

Same thing, bad leg injury, poor medical attention, retired prematurely due to no recovery.

Well done Tigerdog, you've shown well how hit and miss recruiting was then.

The other key factor was that most juniors were already held by the clubs through their local zones and the then U19s.

These zoned U19 boys usually came onto the lists via internal promotions & the supplementary list.

The draft was for the un-zoned boys. That's why so many failed.

The U19s and zoning was done away with in 1992, I recall, and it was then that all boys became open slather and the draft, in the modern sense, began to evolve into what you see today.

In comparing drafts, I would suggest that you look at 1997 as the first real indicative draft.

Still then, it wasn't until the early 2000s, thanks to Champion Data, that statistical data became reliable enough to make accurate drafting decisions.

Went on be the shield games record holder.

Most thought him a better footballer than cricketer before turning to the whites.

Was there that day and he only had four kicks with every goal being from very close range, major disappointment and a guy who also liked a beer or two.

There was a rumour about Lounder (not sure if true or not) that he had missed a few training sessions and noone could get a hold of him. A couple of people from the club went to the house he was living in, to find him sitting in a chair in only his undies, watching tv with empty beer cans strewn across the loungeroom floor.

I remember going to a seconds game at the Lake Oval and seeing him up close at the 1/4 time huddle. He was huge.

BTW, I believe his first game he played mainly on John Law. the height difference was considerable. no wonder he kicked 4 goals.

Pick 14, Wayne Peters, famous for being matched up on Gary Ablett on the wing at the MCG the day he kicked 14 against us.

Recruiting was certainly hit and miss in those days. Brendan Gale was a great pick up though , good career and now our CEO .

We had a few failures around that time as well as Lounder . Banik at Pick 1 played 40-50 underwhelming games and we also picked up a guy by the name of Wayne Peters for a very high pick as I recall who did virtually nothing as well.

& with Benny he was absolutely hopeless at the time of his drafting.

Was playing reserves for Burnie & not getting a kick. Unlike Michael who was a gun junior who played in a senior premiership for Penguin at 18.

No question that his old mans football prowess (Don "Butch" Gale was an all Australian) & as well as his elder brother's was a if not the key factor in his drafting.

& to think that his drafting is having bigger ramifications than ever now & in the future.

KB rated him very highly when we drafted him IIRC.
