Rich V Carl - Match Day Thread

Our backline yet to gel

Midfield looking thin

Forward six with reduced trapping capacity

This will be a test of our new system.

We will also know whether our hunger and desire has returned.

Carts going to disagree on the midfield. Martin, Cotchin, Prestia, Bolton, Graham, Baker and Edwards is not thin. Nank to plays like a mid gathering 15-20 touches.
Not even including the wingers Pickett and Ross.

The dees midfield mostly consist of Oliver and Petracca, Gawn plays like a mid, the next best is Viney and maybe Brayshaw. I think you're underselling our mids.

With Balta, he has speed and also as you say we lose a bit for trapping ability in our fwd line but the offset to this is we gain by playing 3 talls who are all strong on the lead and overhead. Which equals more set shots on goal, the higher chance of converting than trying to scramble through goals more times than not.

I can only go by what I saw in the 2 praccy games, the hunger and the desire was there and I have no doubt they are refreshed and ready to go.
On Cotchin he looks the best I've seen in body and movement-wise for a few years. Prestia we know if he stays healthy watch out, he's a star.

Believe this game will be won or lost in the midfield.
Cripps, so far, has shown his brilliance and wonder about the injury prone human meatball.
If Dusty can prove his worth in the midfield tussles then I do think we can win.
Carlton are not a slow team either, so we need to watch players like Saad, who streams out of that backline like a bat out of hell.

Yeah, although we have been good at this, we have relied too much on scrambling goals. You always need to get a few goals from crumbs, split second opportunities etc, but we also need more goals from good leads and set shots.

Just listening to Brenton Sanderson on SEN.... reckons the Blues...

"haven't got a weakness in their 22, which is why I'm tipping them tonight"

I suppose our only hope now is that the sub is a spud:(

Could this game be an old fashion shootout with both teams transitioning from defence into attack with speed - both attacks look stronger than the defences of both teams at this stage. I like our midfield with two dominant rucks feeding them - both teams midfields are almost at full strength.

If it becomes a battle of midfields then I reckon we win quite easily (4 goals) in a high scoring game.

Wonder how many 50s will be given out tonight against us for umpire "dissent"?
Thatll have a big say in whether we win this one

Oh don’t get me wrong Astute, I think 3 key talls is the way to go, particularly in unlocking defensive numbers.

I also think that the heavy forward press is highly risky in 2022 and that going taller, not shorter, is the way to go

We have no chance of winning according to Brenton Sanderson on SEN:

On Carlton:

"This is a talented team"
"if you look across every line they have so much talent now"
" I'm expecting Carlton to win"
" I can't find a weak link in their 22" o_O

3 key talls forward, yeah, looks good in the game at the moment.

Not just the heavy forward press which is now very risky, defence is looking more difficult. I only saw last night's game on TV so you don't get anywhere near as good a view of the way teams set up. But, I noticed Footscray put a lot of players back when Melbourne got the ball, yet Melbourne still found space. There are clearly better defences than Footscray but shutting down space seems to have got more difficult. So, do you forward press and try and outscore the opposition in the knowledge they are likely to score when they go forward anyway (ie: shootout)? Or do we need to have a tall defence which is also nimble and continue to attempt to block space?

This will develop over the season and I'm sure different teams will attempt to solve this in many ways, very much influenced by the players they have. But it looks interesting. Average score last night was 84 so a little higher than 2021 but we saw an increase early in 2021 so expect to see this go down again as the season develops. Indicates very little on the basis of 1 game but hardly shootout territory.

We'll see.

Its Gabba like weather for round 1 with all this humidity. We always want our team to do well. I think hunger and team process (sound like a coach - everyone doing their bit) gets the 4 points tonight. We all know the Blues have improved year on year, good for them, this is all about our list, our hunger our tilt to contend again.

Ignore pre season, ignore what the teams look like on paper, ignore the history, we will all see what unfolds come 7:25pm tonight.

Go Tigers !

Heard it also and he's certainly entitled to that opinion. ... what I found unusual was that basically the only mention the tigers got was that we'll miss Vlaustin, McIntosh and our role player Lambert. ... all of which is true, though I think he's sold Lambert a little short.

I'm hoping our other 3x, 2x, 1x premiership role players like Dustin, Cotchin, Edwards, Prestia, Riewoldt, Nankervis, Grimes, Broad, Rioli, George, Lynch, Baker, Graham, Short, Bolton, Pickett, Soldo and Balta...... can at least put up an effort against this new super squad.

Would certainly like our role players to put in a good effort against this Carlton outfit stacked with stars and without a weaknesses in their 22.

Can't wait.

It feels right again this year.

Carlton's hype factor reminds me of us with Cousins in 2009, but on a smaller scale. If we look dominant early, there could be a straw that breaks the camels back moment in which we run away with things like we usually see in our Grand Finals.

Here's hoping!

This is Carlton’s Grand Final, they absolutely have to win tonite, to give them belief and their new coach an early scalp. For us, it’s just round 1, that’s why I think the blues win tonite. Sorry
