at the risk of appearing arrogant, let me copy/paste my post below from earlier in the week on another thread - other posters back then didnt agree.
Gibcus is not Samson Ryan, but a big call by the MC , agree with you Red - lets hope it ends up better for him than it did for Samson.
Either way, as the pessimistic one on this site, cant see us winning this year against the Blues, they are coming even if they arent quite there yet.
Carlton's midfield is much stronger with Hewitt and Cerra, Saad and the ex GWS guy now playing back as per their best positions. They were very good against the Dees. They'll get the ball forward enough times to CC and McKay. And for me, our defence hasnt looked on song.
We've lost some true grit players in the arcs too (Flossy at HB and Kam on the wings/pushing back). Graham is always a lock for me in the best 22, but he's had an iffy pre-season.
Think the Blues by 22 points. Wont be the season lost for us. after Rd 1. Or won for them either!
Gee I hope Dion stays fit this year.
That was the post.
Not the end of the world to lose R1.
But we have 3 real genuine issues/we had them last year too (although there is some truth to being cooked last year).
1. Our midfield depth is now in the bottom third of teams - Cotch is cooked, others are tired legs. There's not enough class and depth now to compete with the quality midfields of other teams. Even Lambert playing wont help.
2. Our injury /player conditioining (and it could be linked to old legs) is no where near the performance levels 2-3 years ago. Peter Burge even sounded defensive to me on his last injury video.
3. Assistant coaches need to get better. Every line - defence, mid and forwards isnt learning the lessons from game to game/loss to loss.
