Reece Conca - so long and thanks for all the fish

Re: Reece "Squirrel" Conca

It was great watching Heppel and Conca, Both clubs have beauties. Conca is composed, silky and a hard worker. Heppel is much the same. Both guys just dont get fazed by the situation.

The extra penetration will come with leg strength.
If it does I will be over the moon (fingers crossed)...only thing missing from his game

lol. would you rather him stand in one spot with hands on hips? the reason he's always calling for the ball is because he's aways running hard to create an option. If you watched him closely you would have noticed how he's always running hard without the ball to create an option. If he is ignored he's on his bike making another one, and another one. when he has the ball and gets rid of it, he's again running hard to create another option. It's all about running hard to create a loose man and becoming the next link in the chain. he has the perfect mindset to play todays football. Conca has been starting games better than he has been finishing them which is due to the fact that he runs himself to the ground - alot of the times his efforts go unrewarded. once he gets a few pre-seasons under his belt and is able to run out games then 30+ possession games will be the norm for him, which will be very impressive because he rarely wastes a possession.

I get what you're saying, but IMO he called for it too many times when he was not in position to and a few times it got kicked to him and it resulted in a stoppage or turnover. It's an awareness issue and it's one of those things that once you notice it, it bugs you. I'm not saying he's a dud by any stretch, I'm just saying that he's not quite the messiah just yet either.

Had a close look at both Conca and Heppell deep in the clinches and I can say that at this point, Conca seems much more adept at playing the midfielders role. Heppell's time in the middle seemed to be marked by rushed disposal where as Conca just gives the impression of having oodles of time. It's early days but Heppell may not be suited to a true midfielder's role in which case, we got the recruiting decisions spot on yet again.

Conca 23 disposals at 87% efficiency
Heppell 29 disposals at 59% efficiency

Shows in the stats too. Heppell looks silky when he has time but I too noticed the lack of poise when under pressure. He may well improve when he matures more but I am super impressed with how composed Conca is for a first year player

Heppell had 15 contested possessions to Conca's 7 :stir

Against Esserdumb Conca looked miles more at home in the hurly burly. His belief went up another notch. This kid has played 9 games. Sheiser.

The comparisons with Heppell are pretty interesting. Our boy definitely held his own.

Good call - his pick up and dish to Rance on the HB flank at the 25min mark of the last - that was ridiculously good.

Re: Reece "Squirrel" Conca

Both top 10 picks - both played well - both teams would be happy with their selections. I would have been happy with either pick at this stage after seeing them play last night.

Re: Reece "Squirrel" Conca

Runs all day to provide an option, and then uses it well. Spent much of his preseason in a moonboot. We should be exceedingly happy with his output to date, never mind his future potential.

Re: Reece "Squirrel" Conca

If we could draft another Conca, Batchelor, and Helbig next year I'll be absolutely stoked.

Stop it will ya! There's no room for level headed comments like these on PRE.

Re: Reece "Squirrel" Conca

I'm rapt to have Conca....gonna be a great player for many years.
But Heppell will be just as good.
Conca had better efficiency because Heppell won twice as many contested possessions than Conca.....which means more pressure.

Either way this will never turn out to be a we should have taken him b4 him scenario

Re: Reece "Squirrel" Conca

If conca doesn't get the rising star award this week, I WILL SPEW UP! He has been super consistent in the last 3-4 weeks. And I want Batchelor to get one as well... however he can come late in the season

I had the exact same thoughts, and then thought Batchelor has played 8. That boy's a stayer, and a goer. Took Creamery to the cleaners. He reminds me of a 40s noir detective, quietly dangerous but on the side of good. I'm calling him Sam Spade.
