Reece Conca - so long and thanks for all the fish

Re: Reece "Alfa Romeo" Conca

Still only 25 but he just has to go to another level if he wants a regular game at Punt Road. Good type to have on the books to cover injuries etc etc & that counts at the end of a season.

Shorty has him covered in kicking sure, Reecey has Shorty covered in all other aspects. Some nice classic moves out of heavy traffic, one in particular was comical in making the opposition look inept.

Agree. Conca is great in heavy traffic. Thought he had a good game.

Re: Reece "Alfa Romeo" Conca

Think the rushing and kicking is composure and the poor bugger can’t get a run at it, I’m sure if he could manage a a few seasons of non injury this kicking would be a thing of the past, the few other times he got a run injury free his kicking/composure improved greatly.

Re: Reece "Alfa Romeo" Conca

Decision making for Conca. In the time it takes for him to back out of a pack and then attempt one of his hook floater kicks he could have shot our 3 handballs.

They need to get him to use run and hands more.

Attack on the ball and lateral movement great.

Youre not seriously suggesting Conca is a better player than Houli are you?

In the practice match yes, some of the old Houli was on display panicy decision making and flaky kicking particularly in the 1st 1/4.

Re: Reece "Alfa Romeo" Conca

Cocna looked good before the away game to Adelaide (foot injury) barbecue up until Round 6 his decision making, smart running and delivery look OK.. maybe OK to good. On Sunday he butchered the ball way too often. Under pressure I wont be so critical but open running 40m kicks just kept missing his target.

How many targets did he miss TP?

Re: Reece "Alfa Romeo" Conca

Does the current thread title lend itself towards a new nickname of ‘Ralf’...?

Being a redhead, it seems appropriate (ala Ralph Malph).

Re: Reece "Alfa Romeo" Conca

Still have hope Conca can play in the best 22 but nèds to get back to the form he showed early last year

Have a closer look, Perv. He appears to be trying to do just that.

Re: Reece "Alfa Romeo" Conca

Seeing you have not responded TP I can only assume that you don't know.

He missed two targets by foot which is a far cry from "40m kicks just kept missing his target"

Re: Reece "Alfa Romeo" Conca

Bernie has Conk penned in for the opener already unless Conk does another hammy prancing around Punt Road.

Spot on, L22. I'm actually surprised to see how reasonable the discussion about Conca has been over the last few pages of the thread. It's amazing what a premiership will do. ;D

I thought Reece's game was encouraging. He's strong, ferocious and can break lines. He's the logical replacement for Broad and just like Broad he needs to be programmed to play within his limitations. As many PREnders have noted, Reece's kicking and decision making by foot is the weak point in his game when he's on the park. But I don't believe it's terminal and I certainly don't believe it can't improve. TS rightly pointed out that he's got Short covered in a canter in every other aspect of the game. And Short is no slouch, but he's not in calculations for the 22 like Conca is IMO.

Conca's poor kicking did really stand out on Saturday though and he won't last if he keeps using the ball that poorly. I did think it was uncharacteristically poor even for him. Having said that, some of his linebreaking and one particular contested pill in tight to underground handball to Dusty was top class. He had 8 intercepts which was two more than Vlastuin than Rance. Reece wins the ball back. That's not a revelation nor is it a surprise to see him leading Rance and Vlastuin in intercepts. His form was just like that before he went down early last year.

Conca's rusty performance on Saturday showed enough glimpses to suggest he will at least return to his early 2017 form which has him comfortably in our top 25 even with young players coming through. If Reece stays fit we are a better side. That's a big "if" though. But I said this last year about Reece and I will say it again, there could be significant improvement still to come should he stay on the park. He's averaged 5 games a year since he turned 22 in 2014 and has never played 20 games in a single season.

Very interested to see how he goes next week. I suspect he'll line up in round 1.

Re: Reece "Alfa Romeo" Conca

People forget he was one of our best during our opening 5 game winning streak last year. Easily top 22 when fit.

Well put, Gyps. Agreed.

Re: Reece "Alfa Romeo" Conca

Nice love for Reecey! Yeah his clangers stand out, but I reckon they are easily outweighed by his strengths, easily, and also they reduce with match fitness. I love him, his ball winning and evasion out of heavy traffic is gold AAA standard, and its one of the hardest things to recruit or teach, (that and contested marking). His step is sublime, as good as it gets. He is also tough as nails. Doesn't look it with his grinning hipster head, but he is. Basically he is an exemplar for our current team and gameplan, tough, classy, smart, hardworking, with a bit of chaos 8-, so its no surprise that he's straight in when fit.
