Oh and one more - LIKE - the fact we now acknowledge we need a ruckman and tall defender - only taken 6 years to realise

We have a ruckman...Angus Graham is contracted for 2 more years apparently.

should they be in a position to make such decisions....

im fearful of this club surviving..
Couldn't manage a single positive?
Either that, or you just prefer to focus on the negatives.

Yep that was bad. The Carlton massacre on the TFTF day was the worst for the year without doubt.
Have had few worse days at the football than that. Numbing.
Deserves another half point shaved off purely on that performance which I'd hoped was the kind that was behind us.

Wouldn't get too hung up on that one Oldie, Look at the Wobbles last Friday night mate, can happen to the best teams. Something they though they were past too.

Gawd, I'm soft! I gave them an 8.

We got about as many wins as expected and again, glimpses of what we could be.

Sorely disappointing games against , well you know....

I think our young team will be better for the run on those tropical grounds, games which helped us financially (and which, it turns out, had we have won , would not have got us to the finals anyway,) . And yes a 10 would have been earned with a single final appearance at this stage.

Unfortunately with compromised drafts etc, improvements will come slowly.

I think it might see us a bit more involved in trade week again, due to the compromised draft to try and give us more picks next year.

I saw quite a lot of improvement in our game style as well as some of our players, who have already been mentioned.

When you look at some of our better games we moved the ball almost as well as anyone, the challenge is to get more consistency in our ability to continue that trend and have options when we are closed down by other sides, but that will only come with time.

Player for player trades would be good and still keep some high picks plus a f/s 3rd rounder.

5

No more than that. The stretch when we won 1 out of 9 or 10 games mid year was disgraceful. Few end of season wins don't make up for that.

Agree with ToO and BBC with the positives and negatives and if the score is against expectations then 7 is there abouts.

Malthouse suggested last night that he thought from all the teams missing finals this year, richmond was one of the most likely teams to make the 8 next year. Didn't give reasons why. That is fair endorsement of the improvement achieved from all those at punt road this year regardless of whether it happens or not.

The end of season wins are actually a good sign. Hawthorn lost 12 from 13 mid season in 06' before winning 4 of their last 5 games. Similar situations with St Kilda in 03 and Bulldogs in 05'. All those teams played finals the following year.

Honestly, what do people expect from such a young team anyway? We rivalled the GC for average experience and age for most of the year. Early last year we were being compared with Fitzroy. Yes we have issues, but all things considered Hardwick has done an amazing job.

Like most, I gave a rating of 6.

My expectation at the beginning of the year was that we might struggle for as many wins as last year, based on the 2011 fixture.

Clearly, we have improved on:
Points
Percentage
Points For, and
Ranking

There was a marginal increase in our Points Against (conceded) but the challenges that were placed on our defensive depth makes this understandable.

Atop of this:
1. The new ME Bank Centre was opened, and
2. An agreement with the RCC was made.

I look forward to seeing further pace, strength and depth to our efforts in 2012.

A little underwhelmed to be honest, really wasn't expecting much of an improvement as far as Win/Losses went, just wanted to see an improvement from a team chemistry POV..................at times it looked promising, but as per the case for most of last 30 years, a letdown was waiting in the bushes about to pounce.

A couple of players really improved, namely Vickery, Rance and Nahas, Cotch was outstanding, Dusty was great at times, ordinary at others, but that was to be expected.

But overall many again didnt live up the billing, which wasn't a shock other than the frequency of games they were still gifted.

Thought all 3 draft picks in Conca, Batch and Hellbig showed enough to suggest many more games next year for the 3 of them, but until we really weed out the driftwood, the rollercoaster ride will probably continue for a few more years yet I hate to say.

The losses to the likes of Port and CG really put a dampener on the season for many and those were inexcusable at the time.

I'd have to say it was nothing better than average now thats it over and post a 5/10

agreed.. thats also pretty much how feel.. I give them a 6/10 as they have gone a little better than last year..

My main concern is that we typically have to play out of our skin with all of our top players being in our best to win games.

About 8.

Beat a couple of top 8 sides, drew with another, suggests we are not away from bottom 4 of the 8.

Batch, Conca, Rance and Ty all announced themselves as players, while Bashar showed that he is good enough to be in our best 18. Similar improvement from these guys next year, a pre-season from Griffiths and Astbury (and Moore) and we will be in good shape.

I fully expect us to finish around 6th next year. The only missing link is in the ruck department and I'd hate for us to put too much pressure on Ty while he is so young.

I went a 4.

I always figure that you can't really claim higher than a 5 if you don't make the finals, regardless of what base you are working off. The comp has 16 teams and half play finals.

The point is after a full season we still missed the finals by a fair bit, and our ladder position was probably a true reflection of where we are at as a team.

I debated about whether to go to a 5, but our poor performance mid-season ruled it out IMO.

Phancy Phants, do you still believe that if the club continues on it's current path, taking into account compromised drafts, and with the club maintaining generally the same standard of recruitment/trading that it has established over the last 2-3 years, that success is ...fait accompli? Fait accompli is not exactly the word I'm looking for but you have posted in the past in a manner suggesting this. Just curious, great respect for your work.

Yeh, I still reckon that if we keep heading in the right direction, we'll get there eventually.
As long as we keep on building and developing the list for the long term.

Our strength is in a group that ranges currently from 19yo to 24yo.
You can see it as a wave rolling in.
Next year should see the opportunity of picking up another two very good juniors.
The next few years should see regular improvement.

And we're not the only ones affected by the compromised drafts.

I gave it a 6.  Perspective is the key here - compared to other teams we ended up out of the top 8, had more losses than wins and were well under 100%.  So how could we rate above a 4 or 5?

Well - it's about internal measurements and benchmarks at this stage of the squad's development.  For a start one of the key stated objectives for the year was to spread the goal scoring load.  The development of Vickery, King, Nahas and I'll even give Miller a plug here - was nothing short of sensational.  I reckon even Jack improved this year - he learned to work hard for some one else's reward and to battle through injury.  Big tick there.

Another was to mould a solid defensive back six.  Smaller tick but certainly not a cross.  Our best back six now contain a significantly improved Rance and Grimes, a revelation in Batchelor, a stalwart in Newman and a genius in Deledio.  It still has a ways to go but it isn't the shambles it was 12 months ago.

So there's the front and back halves improved.  Gotta score above a pass mark there.

The midfield developed in the sense that they threw the keys to the kids and said "Drive".  It hardly worked out as you would have hoped - except it got valuable experience into Martin, Cotchin and Edwards (and he needed it more than most as was evident in his general standard of disposal - but he should be better for his first real sustained exposure to the heat of the centre square).  The approach blooded Nahas and Helbig to the big time in the middle of the ground.  Foley came on strong toward the end of the season too.  But the ruck work was awful for the most part - with only a few glimpses of something better shown by anyone.  Perhaps not a pass here.

Most significantly the team showed signs of clicking this year.  At times it worked and moved in organic, cohesive unison - something I haven't seen since the Northey era (don't give me 2001 and our last finals appearance - that team was far too self conscious).  The Sydney game was our best.  We just wouldn't allow them to play their style.  Our team game trumped theirs, our individuals won the one-on-one contests and our resolve was greater. We saw nothing like that last year even though we won a few.

On balance a definite improvement over last year.  SIX.
