R12 - Geelong v Richmond (game day thread)

Why wouldn’t they have tried him in the midfield after halftime to both get him into the game and to relieve the kids who were floundering.

He isn’t a forward. He’s yet another half back flanker or run with player.
I hope very soon the list is flushed clean of Hardwicks preferred running half back types with neither the body shape and strength (most of our recruits over the last 4 years simply have not developed physically into seasoned AFL footballers!), and passion for getting the hard ball; replaced with bulls that develop quickly.

Our mid season duo maybe the beginning of a different sort of footballer that we are desperately lacking at the moment.

Only watched the last 15 minutes, but a few observations from when Geelong were in control and out players would have been worn out.

I do wonder if players get worn out quicker when they are playing a team with more experience and talent? Yes, our young players were too tired at the end of the game, and that is to be expected. But, the older players should be able to run out games. Maybe it is the combination of having to work so hard when we were doing well, and that chasing a better team is a lot more work than being a better team.

I understand the criticism of Pickett, he can stuff things up and he does some frustrating things. But he keeps putting in every week and does a lot of good too. What really frustrated me though were the comments about how he tries to do too much and should just kick the ball forward. This comment is generally surrounded by comments about how Short just kicks it forward and it inevitably leads to a turnover. I prefer our players try to find an option when they dispose of the ball. As such, Short I find really irritating but Pickett a lot less so.

In any case, too many times I saw players with the ball on half back or the wing and there was barely a Richmond player forward of them. You see them get the ball and you think: come on we need to get the ball forward quickly. But they can't because no-one has made it into our forward line yet. This leaves way too much time for the opposition to clog up our forward line. This has been a persistent problem, along with not enough movement in our forward line.

It was the end of the game but too many passes going over the head of the player receiving - this level of skill needs improving. Plus, we continue to pass to stationary players, which makes opposition intercepts or spoils almost inevitable.

Sounds like a decent game from a few of the youngsters: Miller going ok by the sound of it, McAuliffe doing well.

Lot of talk about Sonsie, maybe he can improve with more experience? Some others have improved with more games.

Still sounds like Dow is a bust. Even when he plays well he lacks the size and skills to make it as an AFL centre.

15 minutes of the umpiring was enough for me. They need to get a better handle on prior opportunity. It is too inconsistent the way it is adjudicated at the moment. Did notice a lot of players tapping the ball forward rather than taking possession, that is the price for giving more advantage to the tackler. The holding the ball rule has always been a balancing act, it was clearly out of whack earlier this season, the trick is to not go too far the other way.

That's a long post from watching 15 minutes.

Just got back from the game. Had an absolute ckhead sitting behind me all night. Had to apply extreme control. Dunno how I did it.

Anyway the game. We tried our guts out but when Geesuck turned the pressure and the run up in the second half, we just couldn’t go with them. We tried but we started paddling and fumbling the ball, and they started forcing us to the boundary line which is the death roll when they get you doing that down there. We just couldn’t bring it back inside.

Still, we hung in there in the 3rd quarter but the backline went to water in the 4th quarter. Balta for all his good intercepts must have turned it over 3 times on his own in the 4th quarter. Then Vlastuin a couple of clangers and as usual, Short. Think we kicked it out on the full 3 times coming out of the backline in the last.

Holmes killed us all night. Gee we could do with a hard running mid like that.

But it was a gutsy effort. McAuliffe was good, Baker great, Lefty a bona fide target, Nank tried hard.

Note to Yze though: ffs stop playing Dow at centre bounces. We get obliterated when he’s in there. Better still, just stop playing him all together.

Like the junkies last week the Handbaggers don't impress me.

This was a must win game at hm against way undermanned and inexperienced oppo and had we kicked straight (all bad misses) they could have gone into half time 45+ pts down against a bunch of kids on their own deck.

Take a look at their draw over the next month - they got a real rocket at half time imo.

Samson has his faults but he’s as good a set shot for goal as we have.
Yer, but that's not saying much. Lefau is even better - it's simple: run straight at target, kick straight at target! Maybe some coaching of this 'complex skill' to young players?

Yep, good post, Red. But Holmes killed us; he's become a real star, a game-breaker who runs hard all game. Gifted by our Rd.1 pick 2020. Superb selection by Wells (I guess).

Geez...12 minute presser from Pricky. Longest ever by any coach? Might look at it tomorrow.

If there’s one (maybe 2) knocks on Holmes though it’s that he kicks a few floaters a la Dangerfield. The other is that he lacks a bit of physicality (David King or somebody…might have been someone else) brought this up during the week.

Still, he runs hard and fast all game long and sets up so many attacks.
