Punt Road Redevelopment

Thanks on the MCC, re our location, that didn't matter when the AFL and various governments detailed the complete redevelopment of the MCG precinct, we may be the gateway but the RFC was completely overlooked, the club and Benny Gale where furious and extremely disappointed
Its a wait and see i suppose

way too harsh & not close to being factual, so i will counter your *smile* with a fact or 2

Fact: Multiplex were awarded the building contract
Fact: A major Multiplex subcontractor went bust
Fact: Due to the above fact, tenders for said subcontract package were re-issued
Fact: Price increase on tenders received was approx $8M
Fact: Multiplex has the right to pass price increase onto RFC
Fact: Building will commence this year & will now be done in stages

Well, all of that sucks. But construction does seem to be very expensive.

One question I have about this idea of Punt Rd being a venue for AFLW, VFL etc is the capacity. 8,000 is too small if the AFL are serious about growing AFLW. I would prefer to see 15-20 thousand if it is at all possible.

This is an incredibly challenging time to be building major facilities. It’s really been a perfect storm of builders and sub contractors going broke, shortage of labour and escalating material prices.

Seems like a lot of money on top of all the other increases. Don't dispute much of it is needed but how much is this redevelopment going to cost the club?

That's alright. Its only a matter of time before the RFC go begging to government for more money and the government will bend over as they always do for footy. nothing to stress about (y)

Well footy is a massive part of the Victorian economy.

Well footy is a massive part of the Victorian economy.

correct. but it doesn't mean they should hog all of the funding... especially when the AFL is massively cashed up.

Just look at Tassie. They will end up spending over a billion dollars on a footy stadium they don't need, while other sports will miss out. The Jackjumpers badly need an upgraded stadium. that will never happen now

The tenders are due before end of November. Below is an outline of what the tender covers:

Key components of the entire redevelopment include:

1. Demolition of the existing Jack Dyer Stand and northern extent of Swinburne Centre

2. Construction of a new grandstand and underground carparking

3. Construction of a new Sports Hall

4. Landscape deck and associated public realm works

5. Oval expansion and reorientation, including sports lighting and equipment

6. Refurbishment of the existing Swinburne Centre

The project is proposed to be delivered in multiple stages, with the Base Scope including Stage 1 – Ground Floor and

Level 1 of the Grandstand and Stage 2A – oval re-orientation and expansion.

Budget between $100m and $200m for all stages

So still no start date in sight, budget blowout is a bit mind blowing.

Thanks for comprehensive update.

Oh, I don't know. It really isn't a great stand at it has been neglected for decades so is in bad repair.

Just hope as an AFLW member I can get a seat in the new stand, no idea how you access the current stand at games now.

Pretty much standard approach. Get a price for the whole lot and then work out what’s required to do everything. I’m pretty sure the base scope is what was planned initially.

I’ve been involved in projects like this broken up in bits when you know you probably don’t have the money for all of it. It gives information about what you can’t do as well as what you can.

If I recall correctly the car park is bigger this time around and that should be self financing or even financed by selling the rights to a car park operator.

Nah, I have been waiting for it to be torn down for years, it's condemned and rendered useless for awhile now.
True but I mean the traditional look of the stand from afar will be missed. A bit like the old MCC stand at the G where that stadium is now shaped as a huge soup bowl.
