With the departure of Robin Nahas Richmond are now turning their focus to a classy small forward who will add a bit of the old x-factor to a predominantly workmanlike set-up in the front end of the ground. They had kept close tabs on the magical duo Impey & Kennedy-Harris but realised the Hampson trade would probably take these excitement machines off the table. Instead they have opted for the mercurial North Adelaide goal sneak Alex Spina.
Come in Spina, may be the catch cry for the throngs of Tiger supporters who have been starved of a 40 goal small forward for close to two decades. Has it really been that long? Well, Chris Naish was probably the last genuine crumbing opportunist who could reasonably lay claim to being A-grade dangerous around goals, others like Krakouer & Nahas never really delivered on a consistent basis, the former saving his best whilst playing for the team we shall not mention.
So could Spina reasonably lay claim to the elite tag that is afforded to the likes of Betts, Garlett & Walters? I tend to think in the affirmative. When sizing up Spina's potential one must bear in mind that he's suffered through an interrupted preseason and probably didn't get to truly showcase his array of party tricks at the u/18 carnival. Leading into the competition, there was intense talk around the traps that Spina was a Stevie J clone who was ready to sell more candy than a Cadbury's factory at Easter time, unfortunately it was only a half-glass effort which ultimately left many wondering if he was little more than a tease in a tiara.
Well I'm going into bat for Spindarella, because whilst he fell short on his promise of a first round dream weaver, I can still sense that the diamond studded shoe can be found somewhere nestled amongst some reserve grade Rooster poo. As a chick amongst the big birds, Spina has actually shown that his lean showing against the boys was simply a mild bout of H1N1, and that 20+ possession games with some magic in the mix aren't beyond the realms of possibility. Those at the AIS know what Spina is capable of because they have offered him a scholarship two years running, and despite the frequent interruptions, have continued to support him in his bid to reach peak fitness and deliver on the hype. At pick 68, it's nigh on impossible to not recognise the significant upside in a player like Alex Spina, so welcome aboard tiny dancer and let's hope that you'll be torpin' your way into the hearts of all Tiger fans.
