Pick 72: Ryan Garthwaite

I don't believe Grimes is 193, more like 190, 191 at the most. I reckon a lot of those height measurements are dodgy.

I certainly didn't think that Grimesy was 193cm's.

Could have easily taken him off Hawkins at quarter time but loved the confidence of the coaches in his ability and therefore leaving him on it. Commentators were dumbfounded, I guess that's why they commentate and don't coach.

Hee's so strong in the air & reads the ball well. That enables him to get away with being a few cms shorter. Was a very ballsy matchup by the coaching staff. He did a great job.

Rhino sounds more appropriate for a nickname.

he didnt *smile* up a kick either. hit every target I saw. didnt hand it to a more experienced bloke to deal with, pulled the trigger himself, with a plum

and was directing traffic.

from where I was sitting, it was a truly extraordinary debut. another :clap
Kids got a dodgy looking way of kicking the ball, mechanical as all *smile*. Ya think he's gunna flub kicks all day long n just makes a fool of ya. Very tidy game from Garp, problem is how to get more games into him over the next couple of years so he's fully blooded n ready to go when we really need him.

The kid is 19 standing one of the premier forwards in the game who is 29 and giving away height and weight and was ultra competitive. Gunna be a ripper for a long time this boy.

Being there must make a real difference. On the telly (well on my phone really) he looked out of sorts. A bit lost and 2 steps slow whenever Hawkins had space to run. Time for me to invest in a Chromecast and re-watch that game on the big screen.

He did well but was beaten. He’s a 19 year old kid playing on an experienced AFL brute, he did well to stay in the contest. I still remember a teenage Jarryd Roughead refusing to fly for a mark in the goal square against Barry Hall and look how he turned out. Garth wasn’t intimidated, stuck to his task and Hawkins wasn’t exactly a match winner after quarter time. That’s all good as far as I am concerned.

Agreed. Hawk wasn't having an impact really but I wouldn't give Garp the credit. If Geelong had been able to isolate him I reckon Garp would have struggled. That said I was delighted for him that they stuck with him and he will hopefully take a bit of confidence out of the game. He kept working and providing an option. Not slating him but just confused by some of the praise I'm reading. He was good. Not great to my view.

Garth was great. What better experience then to play on a brute like Hawkins and not get over-awed. Hawkins has had 3 goals or more in his last 6 games. He had just 11 disposals. The week before he had 23. 4 score involvements. Previous 2 weeks he had 11 and 9. No goal assists, first time in 7 games. And his lowest Supercoach score in 7 games. Yes that is a result of the team as a whole but also Garthwaite's presence. Sure he was beaten overall, most are against Hawkins, but how many first gamers would have performed as well as Garth did?

he did extremely well

still undersized to play on the monster forwards though

A very good game form Garth, he played it smart and didn't get caught up in a wrestling match. I liked how he backed his own judgement, he got caught out with Kneekins first two goals game when he gave him too much space. Overall he played a clever game, which dragged Kneekins out of the contest on a few occasions.

It's going to be hard for him to crack seniors as a defender so this week's VFL report is interesting given our issues with 2nd ruck/forward.

Ryan Garthwaite

13 disposals, one goal, seven marks and two tackles

“Defended really well for three quarters, then we swung him into forward/ruck in the last and we’re developing him in different roles as well. He kicked a nice goal and we had a good celebration around the goal he kicked. He’s in great form but we just wanted to see if he could play that forward/ruck role, which he seemed to do pretty well in the last quarter. Seven marks was a feature for him for the day, especially three contested.”
