Pick 53: Jack Graham

17 clubs could try all they want but end of the day there is only 1 person that makes the decision and thats jack Bowes
He goes to the club he selects and GC has no choice but to deal with that club but you dont take a $1.6 mil salary dump for pick #7 and sacrifice your TPP and players like Bolton if it doesnt fit your list.

1. Off load players you dont need (Soldo , Castagna and maybe Graham if you see another player can do his role)
2. Convince Bowes to come on a new deal 3 x $500k

Thats the only way i see Richmond having any chance to get #7
You could go lower, 4 x 400k, it's doable, Bowes is an ok player, but pick 7 would be gold. It's the ticket to fix the forward line.

Why would Bowes do that deal. If he is rumoured to be owed 800 per yr for two yrs it mean he's been heavily underpaid in previous yrs. So for him to then just spread the remaining cash over a longer period short changes him. Fantastic for the club not so much for him.

You could but why would he ? I mean he is guaranteed to get $1.6 mil for 2 years but why play 4 years to get the same money

I would see him sacrifice 1 extra year to move to the club of his choice and extend his earnings after that
but he will be 25 next jan so if he takes the 4 year option he gets to 29 and his earnings diminish

Personally i wouldnt if i was him and just go 3 years

In the end if we're doling out 7 year deals any Bowes tinkering will look insignificant, the money maybe a bit more, probably can't sell the premiership dream without some carrot. Pick 7 would be good though, it's worth paying him some more to have that privilege, could be gold this year.

Yes the pick will be gold but i would highly doubt it comes with no strings attached and a pick will also be required most likely #19
no chance its a #7 give away.

But at the end of the day you must have use for this player and after Hopper/Taranto he is not a need a failed mid thats become a slow'ish mid sized backman

where does he play ? VFL ?
thats alot of cap space and list spot for a pick upgrade

Is he definitely a failed mid? They also butchered Brodie's development, Bowes is a pretty good kick from memory, a little bit one paced but so is Taranto.

Maybe Jack dosent really want to go, but has simply been offered a longer contract and the promise of more midfield time as I’d imagine like most midfielders they’d rather play midfield then on a flank .

Hope he stays as is defensive running is so important to us even if our style tweaks a bit over the summer, also with our all time starting midfield getting older an close to the end it’s important we do keep Jack for 2024 an beyond .

JG is one of my faves, however I don’t think he’s in the class of Hopper and Timmy

Was thinking a bit more about this.
Not only would JG be wondering about new recruits Taranto & Hopper coming in next season but the resurgeance of Chimp & his extended contract also has likely had some impact. Along with notable improvements in Jack Ross & Tyler Sonsie looking like he'll make the grade.
Graham no doubt would be wondering where he fits in next season. He may be looking for more opportunity & more midfield time after spending much of this season on a forward flank. Good on him for dipping his toe in the water.

Still need Jack ToO. Midfield depth still an issue going forward even with the inclusion of T & H. Dion injury prone and Cotch has 1 yr left. Ross and SonZ largely unproven. Dusty will play more forward than previously and Shai will probably never be a full time mid. RCD and Dow are busts.

Has JG ever played as a primary midfielder & had success AT?
That to me is the biggest question, whether he can make that transition to a starting midfielder & win his own footy.
Been very good as a role player in the midfield but I think that too is still largely unproven.

T71 has said that Graham is highly valued by tigers and won't be going anywhere, remember he's a 24 yo mid who is about to enter his prime years.

Pretty sure they aren't the only ones.
I'm surprised they signed Short to 5 yrs
He wouldve been a perfect option to trade out. Especially now Rioli has blitzed the half back role
With a much much better inside mid crew, short will be invaluable as a outside mid.

Is this the same T71 that said Taranto wasn't leaving GWS and Cerra doesn't want to go to the Blues?

I'm sure the club has regular conversations with all players about their performance and where they sit in the structure of the team. I would expect that Graham left the exit interview fully aware of where Dimma see's him, if he is an integral part of the team's plans for 2023, if the club would like to keep him but can't guarantee him best 22 status, or if it would be in his best interests to look elsewhere.

Problem is I reckon he always get designated as that Defensive midfielder so he is not allowed to get out and just win his own ball. As a junior he didnt have any issues finding it and has had a few 30 plus games when his role has opened up. Its just that he is elite at pressure acts that he does not necessarily have to win a whole lot of his own ball to comply with coaches instructions. Typically averages in the high teens to low 20's. I dont think you can judge this year based on carrying his Turf toe when he relies on getting contest to contest

You do have to give a bit to get a bit.
The difficulty is that the Richmond boys are so tight with each other and each important to the fabric of the club in their own way.
Shorty a case in point. Hugely popular, energetic and culture driver. But expendable out on the ground.
Graham similar. So on and so on.
Geelong survived and actually thrived when they lost Kelly.
Cut throat business.
He would not have got a 5 year contract if the club thought he was expendable out on the ground.

Not sure why, but I don't think he's ever been used as a pure inside ball hunting mid. Usually plays a more defensive pressure mid harassing the oppo midfielders.
