Pick 53: Jack Graham

He might be a good leader but Fridge is slow. The complete opposite of how we roll forward with the ball.

With Collier-Dawkins coming up slowly, I’d look at a first round pick and wish him all the best if the offer is 650K.

If he wants to stay on less, all well and good.
He may look slow but he isn't. Telstra Tracker says otherwise

Graham's perceived lack of speed is mythic around here.

He's only slow in the acceleration equals change in velocity over change in time kinda way.

He's not slow in the football kinda way. He gets to the ball. He gets around the ground. He gets to the player who has the ball. He gets the ball away when he has it.

A couple of busted shoulders made it look like he was a couple of steps off, but that was strength and confidence. And inexperience and youth.

No surprise that as his strength and confidence in his body has returned he suddenly looks quick again.

He's slow in the same way that Dion Prestia is short.

Maybe he is in basic, measurable dimensionality, but not in a football game.

Well said Coburg
JG is now showing us what he is capable of as a fit and freely moving player
It would be a tragic waste if some other club was to get the benefit of his next few years
He might not be as fast and nimble as a Bolton - but he doesn’t have to be either

I never cared when Poole or Wilson left the club because i thought one day we become good and prove them wrong.
I didn't expect to wait nearly 30 years.
Losing players when your successful is part of the gig nowadays.
Its the right one's you let go is the trick. The ones that won't effect your course as club.
Is Graham a great bloke? Yes
Has Graham got leadership qualities? 100%
Is he worth 650-700k? No

Now its up to him to accept the offer or scatter to a club that will *smile* him off as soon has a slump in form or he gets injured again.
Graham needs to remember, it was Hatley that found him, his entire state ignored him.
He will accept the 2 years from us and stay. He knows Carlton are disaster.

He’s one shoulder injury away from a disaster

That sort of logic applies to most blokes
Come the start of 2022 season Soldo will be one ACL from disaster
Rather have both Soldo and Graham fit and well and playing for us then

Good news is that those fat salaries drop out after 21 ,opening up critical space ,we should have enough for BBB
Pretty sure Lynch’s contract was heavily back ended. I think he was on $500k for first two years then increased after that to average $1m over 5yrs (or was it 7yrs). I thInk salary cap was going to be decreased next year due to Covid and would expect our bean counters will be working overtime to fit players in. Will certainly be an interesting off season.

How are clubs meant to plan ahead?

Every club would be front or back loading contracts to fit in the salary cap and they can't just arbitrarily reduce the cap or every club will be in trouble.

Might explain why it is taking so long for an announcement on this.

How many times can a player keep copping a should injury?
IMO another bad shoulder injury and he'll be done

Chris Judd had the same issues early in his career. He turned out to be a decent player.

We’re obviously squeezed real tight on the cap and Balmey is in that arkward position of keeping the curtains open while adding talented youth . Point been I really don’t want to lose JG or any of BBB an associates , as others have said JG is possibly a future Captain , so would we better of trading out one of the more senior players to free up cap space ?

In Balmey we trust
part of the problem at the moment is that noone actually knows what the salary cap is. List sizes are going lower as will the salary cap, not necessarily on a prorata basis

Not only did Hartley find him, he trusted him to be good enough at the top level which he has clearly shown. Speed of foot is not Jack's strength but it doesn't have to be and this is the point other clubs missed. We have other players to do that outside run. Now Jack has the opportunity to honour that trust and ignore any approaches from other clubs whilst he is still in his prime. We still need his strong inside work and quick reflexes and handball. His shoulders will be fine. If he gets injured the medicos can fix him, whether it's his shoulders or legs (he got over the ankle injury he had when drafted) or whatever. The same can be said for every player in every club, no one knows what injury will come next. Degenerative joint conditions are the red flags to end careers apart from concussions. Let's not forget Juddy who was passed over by some clubs because he'd had multiple shoulder injuries and operations even before he was drafted. He turned out pretty well.

He was never going to leave us and end up going to Carlton.
This isn't 1983
