Pick 53: Jack Graham

Does all the tough stuff Jacky G.

Tackles, smothers and pressures the opposition relentlessly.

His attack on the ball v Nic Nat to help set up our first goal was first class.

All those poor games were on a wing. I’m glad they rested him and sent him back into the guts. He looks to be moving more freely as well.

His last two weeks have been some of his best footy. Disposal has improved out of sight and making better decisions. Still tackling. If his body stays right you really don't want to lose him at the end of the year.

The knock on him has been his speed. However footy takes all types and there's been plenty of great players without leg speed (Greg Williams is the first that comes to mind). But to be a great player in that context, you have to have other attributes.

I remember watching Graham at VFL level when he first started and the two things that stood out was his big body presence and tackling in contests (he seemed to enjoy contact and not all players do) and he accumulated possessions. At AFL level up to now and when his body is right, he's been good at the contest but hasn't got enough of the ball. He's now started to show signs of the latter.

His pressure acts are gold and that clears the way for the other midfielders, but to cement his place he had to find more of it and use it. Now his body is right, he looks like the talented youngster I first saw at Punt Road. I'll also accept lack of pace if he can run all day.

3.2 clearances a game in 2017. 1.2 in 2018, 2.4 in 2019. Injury leads to numbers like these. Was he averaging 1 for 2020? Yep. Until he got 3 and 4 in the past fortnight.

Have you seen Taranto since is shoulder? Ablett jr after his? 19-21yo Graham had shoulders. Injuries that stifled his development.

Suppose Graham hits up the club "Adelaide is saying it's not fair to use a player recovering from multiple shoulders in a defensive/tackling role (see 2019 PF!) - that they'll give me a ball-winning role because they believe in me." He'd have to get a go, wouldn't he?

His last two weeks have been different to what we'd expect from him. He is more explosive. And he was even a bit lairy once.

I got lairy very wrong in 2016. Condemning it. But I know now. At Richmond, when a player is lairy it is to stretch his game. We let the player excel. (And fail and try again.) He gets a licence to push his own boundaries.

Jack Graham drives into a pack, blind turns 270* and delivers a crisp and constructive handball to a team mate in the gap. Was that in the first quarter? Usually he'd be trailing Luke Shuey. Locking somebody down.

But no. Jack Graham is getting a licence to attack the ball and he's doing brilliantly when the game is on. He is winning it early and using it quickly and smart by hand.

I think we might be training him more for explosive. License to hit ball. His numbers are up. His game looks great.

Should we keep Jack Graham? Concentrate and ask again.

Watching his last 2 games it kind of looked like he was trying to play like Cotchin does where he hits a pack or man with or near the ball in a similar way and when he gets its does what Cotch does and take the first option to off load.

Personally i wouldnt want to trade him as we would probably only get a pick between #25-#40 and there is no guarantee's to get his quality at that pick and he is just 22 so still room for improvment

He looked really slow earlier in the year. Seems to be moving along the ground faster these last few. Then again most of the team looks rejuvenated.

Has played very well the last couple and showed signs even beforehand. I'm still very concerned regarding his shoulders. Has had a lot of injury to them. Fingers crossed those issues are behind him.

Noticed no heavy strapping last week.
Looks in good Nic(k).

That tackle on NicNatPaddywack showed the confidence he has in his shoulders and it stuck.

Back in form. We're a much better side when he's in and playing well. Similar story with KMac

Looks lighter and fitter. I’ve been a critic in the past but he’s cemented his spot.
