Pick 33 Discussion

Touk Miller for me. Good leader, nice build. Lots of upside.

Pretty sure he'll be a Hawk.
What are your thoughts on Clem Smith?

Reading some phantom drafts it's hard to gauge where he will end up going. Seems to have gone out of favour throughout the course of the year. To me it smells like another WCE / Freo tanking tactic.

He was suffering from a back injury at the combine, maybe he even staged a little. I also noted Pickett ran some slower times so maybe there's a bit of foxing going on. I think he'll be picked up in the top 40, definitely a boom/bust type. I would imagine he recorded some ordinary skinfold tests so there's work to be done. I much preferred his form last year and I thought he did ok in the VFL game. At 52 I'd say yes, at 33 maybe not.

Cheers BH.

I will be crossing fingers / toes that we somehow land one of Neal-Bullen / Blakely / Gore / Miller with our second pick.

Add either Wright / Weller / Duggan / Cockatoo to that mix and we would have nailed this draft.

Yes, the stage is definitely set to get 2 very good players. I even think there's some significant value at the deep end. Another smokey could be Jaden McGrath, thought he looked very much at home against the bigger bodies. At 52 or 70 he could be a real steal.

Not Shane Yarran; rookie draft m-a-y-b-e

Hopefully a skilled speedster slides to 33, as I suspect the Pendleburyesque Blakely won't last that far

Geez McGrath looked good against the Pies.

Touk Miller in the Herald Sun talked about potentially being taken between 30-34. Being described as a pure inside midfielder tackling machine. Seems to be a bit of love for him here.

If the Hawks take someone like Vickers-Willis then Miller may slide, would be a good selection at 33.

He certainly did, Brayshaw was BOG but I had McGrath second best for the AIS. It's only one game game but he looked really good, much better than Duggan & Petracca on the day.

Fingers crossed. I'm really warming to McGrath at 52 if he's there.

Wright/Weller (12), Miller/Gore (33), McGrath (52), and McGuinness (70) would have me a very happy man. Adds nicely to our McStocks too.

2nd Round
Connor Blakely, Swan Districts
Dean Gore, Sturt
Toby McLean, Oakleigh Chargers
Alex Neal-Bullen, Glenelg
Clem Smith, Perth
Ed Vickers-Willis, Sandy Dragons

just had a look at his vid, looks the goods. would you prefer himk or Lonie? i don't know much about either but have heard a bit more about Lonie being wanted & not much on McGrath.

McGrath has had a wretched run with injury so I really only have one game to go on, but it was a damn fine performance against a strong Magpies unit. He has great speed and agility, he's a contested ball winner and he won't be bullied by the senior bodies. I liked that game so much that I would place him ahead of Lonie, it's a speculative call but sometimes that's the only way to unearth true talent at the tail end of the draft. Lonie is a good player but he's very light, still some way to go before he's ready. McGrath I could see getting a game or two next year provided his body holds together, he's had a wrist injury, he then developed patella tendinitus and then pulled a hamstring. It could be a case of bad luck or buyer beware, I'd be willing to give him the benefit of the doubt.

Depending how we go with pick 12, and whether Neal-Bullen/Miller are one the table, one of the other hyphenated boys in DVR or Vickers-Willis would be good gets. DVR is silky, tough and provides a lot of run. Could easily see him playing on a wing in future. Vickers-Willis I see long term as an inside ball winner with a lot of positional versatility (190cm - bit of Mundy about him). DVR I'd want if we got Ellis or Duggan to bring a bit of spark. Vickers-Willis if we got Weller or the *smile*.

I personally don't see the point in recruiting DVR & Duggan, they will effectively be competing for the same position in the first couple of years. Both would also be competing with Batch who recently inked a new contract. Vickers-Willis is an interesting proposition but I still would prefer the inside mid, to me they are bankable commodities and we cannot afford a misstep at 33.

Yeah, I mean more so if the obvious ones are gone then those two would be good gets regardless IMO.
