Pick 12 discussion.

My concern is that Salem averaged only 15 touches in his 4 U18 carnival games. Pretty low numbers for a mid, we don't need another SEdwards who struggles to get over 20 possessions as a midfielder. Did Salem make the AA team?

He had a poor carnival, no doubt about it. The only game he showed his class was against NSW, but it was an absolute clinic, worthy of a top ten pick. At TAC level he had 3 BOG's, averaged 145 Supercoach points and made the TAC team of the year on the back of 5 quality games. His game against Collingwood reserves was also decent although he did fade a bit as the Pies got on top. He's worthy in my opinion, he's an incredibly well rounded footballer who can play anywhere on the ground. He's dual-sided, can run a sub 3 sec sprint and has a decent tank, there's not much to fault all things considered.

was he injured during the carnival? was he tagged?

in his 5 TAC games he averaged 23 possies. still not massive numbers. must have high efficiency & high contested rate to get 145 points.

was he injured to have only played 5 games?

He didn't spend huge amounts of time in the middle which has affected his output but he did enough to suggest he can play. The reason he scored so well in Supercoach terms is because he tackles like a man possessed and kicks goals - clutch goals at that. Teammates go to him when the heat is on, something which is testament to his elite disposal. I see Salem as a Chad Wingard type who will be damaging on the scoreboard and in the middle. He may not burst out of the blocks like Chad but will surely impact in a similar manner to Flossy, he just has AFL written all over him.

He's also an AIS boy, hence the reason he didn't play too much TAC, I can fully understand Collingwood contemplating using pick 6 on him.

Matthew Scharenberg revealed to have serious issues in both feet.

The plot thickens. The draft order is impossible to predict.

Good questions on Salem by Harry. Like Salem but not sold on him. The NSW game is not enough for me. Performing at The carnival counts for a lot in my book.

He tagged Aish in one game and did very well. I'm not that concerned about his championship stats. It's easy enough to look for reasons not to draft nearly every player.

Very true Gus, I forgot about that game. I might whip out the Vic Country game again because I recall him performing strongly in that one too.

I think it's important to realise that these guys are played out of position at the Champs, so it doesn't pay to focus solely on the stat sheet.

Is it just me or is this the most unpredictable draft of recent years?

Usually at this time of the year just about every one knows which team will pick who (in the top ten at least).

This isn't a bad thing.

The draft has been diluted by the absence of Martin and Hogan. By putting those two names into the mix I'm sure a lot of the people would be regarding this group as a pretty good one.

I like the fact that the order is changing almost daily by the media speculation. I also think clubs are prepared to ignore the short term wins some players might provide by looking at players that might take a bit longer to make it. In most other years the likes of Kolodjashnij and Bontempelli wouldn't be top 10 candidates but now clubs are happy to wait for them to develop.

Who would be your preferences for our pick?

I'm not an expert on the kids, but just reading the comments. My choices would be Bomba, John Lennon and jones's brother

Schareberg, Aish, Salem, Taylor, Lennon & Acres, in that order. I realise there's no hope in hell that we'll go for Taylor but I still rate him highly.

Lennons 28 poss avg in his midfield stint + 2 goals a game does it for me. Hes the goal kicking mid we need, the passionfruit icing. Plus hes got the big noggin', which seems to be part of FJ's winning formula. Conca, Ellis, Vlastuin, Lennon. Its land of the big heads. Hes obviously also one of those genetic smart arses whos brothers and sisters are all pros too, which I like.

Having learnt my lesson on vlastuin last year, I'll be rapt also with one of Salem, acres, jones, freeman, acres.

Whats the bet Melbourne have asked for the scans of Scharanberg's feet, not for their own benefit,
but to highlight it to other clubs bout his injuriesso that he gets to their pick 9

Players like Fyfe from Freo have shown what you can get from players that slide or are judged to risky for top 10 picks so yeah I agree

Seems to me the journalists have no idea, bouncing round like yo-yos, waiting for Emma q to reveal all in the next few days

She has no clue either, just read her recent article in The Age and there are no bold predictions. She does state that we will go for whoever is left out of Lennon & Salem, then Freeman and Jones. I really hope we land Salem, he's perfect for our structure and should impact very early in the piece.

Salem would be great but I still can't see him getting past Collingwood or Melbourne.

Some club has done the old rumour spreading on Scharanberg. Most likely Melbourne.

If we do land Salem what impact do you see him having in his first year?

No different to any of our recent draftees, he didn't look out of place against Collingwood reserves so expect a minimum of 12 games next year. Physically he's as prepared as any of this year's batch, I think his combine results were outstanding and he will have no problems nailing down a half forward role with brief stints in the middle.

But don't rule him out, if the Dogs select Bontempelli then everything changes, Collingwood will probably go the Scharenberg/Aish double and Melbourne seem very keen on Freeman. Fingers corossed.
