Opposition discussion

Not putting him on our radar but I rekcon with the smacking Essendon got and them missing finals again, I reckon Darcy Parish walks from Essendon.

And I think Geelong get him or the Hawks through an offer at him he cant refuse. And maybe Essendon, don't sign McKay to get a compo pick inside 10 and decide they want to rebuild properly. That's the smart thing to do.
i'm not really sure about Parish. Seems a good accumulator with little hurt factor. Still he may flourish elsewhere.

Is this Harley Reid a champion? Or some kind of Rayner?

If he's a champion Carlton should maneouvre Walsh out and into pick #1. NMFC wants rapid improvement and Walsh is young contemporary with their exisiting midfield and better than Simpkin.

If need be Carlton should include Lewis Young in the deal. A dazzling offer.

Carlton won't do any of this because the club is run by coteries. But, eh. This is the right play.

Cripps is a potato. Walsh is miles worse.

80% of GCS's next premiership side is already on the list. Apparently. FMD. Premierships are easier than I thought. GCS is the worst kicking side in the history of the game. Most players are neither footed.

GCS has a mature midfield these days. They missed their champ Miller this year. And Rowell is just coming good from a knee. (Two year plus for one of them.) But Anderson has played 80 games now. Dumb and dumber by nature but he's improving. He can get a kick.

Swallow is close to retirement. Fiorini should have been retired years ago.

Flanders is interesting. Mercurial. Sometimes smart. Immature. Not naturally hard. But Prestia like in glimpses. Humphrey is the hope. Can be rugged. Not dynamic at the level as an 18yo. Not yet. These are two promising young stocks. A lot will depend on how they develop.

There's not enough depth or talent here but two gerries Champ Miller and Plodder Swallow have replacements in the wings in Flanders and Humphrey. This midfeild as a combo will peak net year. Then the gerries will fall off and GCS will need replacements. So. It's smart for GCS to add and cuddle Dion Prestia next year in the hope of making the finals. He'll get cover here. And he's show Rowell and particularly Flanders how to hit the fall.

This is not a premiership midfield as it stands. If Flanders and Humphrey can improve to the level they can take it there. If they come on next year GCS goes places.

Witts is adequate, often good, but 30odd. Moyle is an unknown 21yo dinosaur. Levi Casboult is the next ruck. He's 40 FFS. Ruck roster can be rectified.

Will Powell has great talent but can be dumb. He is a premiership class player. Ben Ainsworth is weak at lawn height. Not enough ground game. But he can play HBF. That's his next role. Mac Andrew looks a million bucks. But 18yo HBFs can do that. Elijah Hollands can't get it but he kicks the jacket off it and may make it. GCS just got four small back stocks for 2024.

DMac is a dud. Ben Long is miles worse. Trade the former. Delist the latter. Small backs? GCS has mature and maturing talent.

Sam Collins is short, can't jump, lacks class and is a bit dumb. Determined and coachable. Yeah, nah. He's the best tall back at GCS. Ballard is physically weak, neat skills, and smart. He plays high and pushes back. Lacks on the shoulder defence.

Jack Atrosius coudn't play tall back or #3 back because he wasn't talented enough or was too important. His work forward this year has been adequate, and despite his naturally *smile* kicking he has often been smart with the ball. You'd trade him if you got an offer. But for now he's a #3 forward. Dimma will probably trade him.

And now we're looking at the forwards. I could write 40,000 words on Ben King. 10,000 of them would be intelligible. Seven are precise. He's a perfectly adequate number two forward.

ATM GCS has no other forwards.

The premiership side looks like this-

FB: Andrew(?), NOBODY, NOBODY
HB: Powell, Ballard(FFS), Ainsworth(?)
C: NOBODY, Rowell(?), Anderson(?)
HF: Humphrey(?), B.King, NOBODY
FF: Rosas(?), NOBODY, Atrosius
R: Moyle(??), Flanders(?), NOBODY
Int: MIller?, Farrar(?) NOBODY, NOBODY

Mine list above is not a bearish perspective. I have 75% of GCS's next premiership already on the list. With luck.

Lotta work to do. And luck.

Harley Reid is probably a champion, but I have these nagging doubts he could be more Stringer or Raynor than Dusty. Not saying he will be, just that he could be. I can understand why he's the set-in-concrete no. 1, but if I had the no. 1 pick, and I want a future captain superstar goalkicking midfielder, I'm taking Colby McKercher.

He is in the standout top 3 of the draft, with McKercher and Walter, and that 3 are above the rest and you can make an argument for any 1,2,3 order, but he isn't the standout no. 1.

Interesting, snake.

If it's JHF's year you just trade for the pick. Walsh out. JHF in. Just my idle speculation anyways.

Interesting & entertaining take as always Jack.

Have to disagree on Ballard being weak. And on Collins being the best KD at the GCS, Ballard is clearly their best IMO.

I would have thought contested marks would be a decent measure of a key defenders ability in the contest.

Only Darcy Moore takes more contested marks on ave than Ballard. More than the likes of Andrews, Lever, May, Collins, Weitering, Wilkie, Pearce, Cox....Taylor & Balta ave the same as Ballard. I'd prefer Ballard in a one on one than Balta.

I'm a big fan of Ballard, only just turned 24. Probably only take Sam Taylor in front of him as a KD for the future.

On the Suns, Bailey Humphrey will be there best player by the time he is 21.

He is 18 years old in 2023. Will be a beast.

I'm not altogether a hater, MD. Ballard has had a good year and improved. His aerial D has certainly improved. I'm watching a few GCS replays atm. Review.

Yeah Ballard is good.

I don't think the Dimma 80% of a flag side sitting there comment is that big a stretch. They have 8 or 9 very good players, and remembering that a premiership side is 30% role players, a solid pool of them, 3 top-notch first round juniors about to walk in the door, and likely a couple more next year. He'll make a few trades as well.

Getting Dimma was the best thing they could have done, but there is still a good chance it won't work. I think they improve, but win a flag? Maybe, my money would be on not, because they are Gold Coast, nobody cares that much.

Their biggest stake holder the AFL does.

That's what's being engineered here, That's my belief anyway.

80% of the next GCS premiership team may very well already be at Gold Coast.

ACLs for both Melksham and Dunstan.

Terrible decisions from both Dunstan and Grundy to go to the Dees.

This is the flakiest top 4 in years. More gaps in these sides than old man Nobet Pays’ front teeth. It’s gonna be a case of least worst wins.
