Noah Balta - Welcome to Tigerland

If he plays till the bye I can see him having either a 20 possession game , a 5 goal bag or a major forward scalp along with a couple of quiet games ........hope we just keep playing the kid

Agree. Think his role needs to be simplified so his development can build. Similar to how grimes started off being the spoil king. Play tight and spoil. Didn't worry about marks or possessions. Once he gets his timing right he'll realise he's just too powerful for his opponents and the marks and possessions will come. It's a shame with our injuries and no 2nd ruck option he's been forced to play so many roles.

Gees, I only wish Bevo had adopted this approach with his wunderkind, Naughton, who is also just 19. If only he had just played 'tight and spoil'!

No doubt it's dented his confidence and damaged his progress ... going forward and taking a near-record 9 contested marks. No doubt they won't let that happen again.

Same with Balta's goal. Outrageous! Should have just hand-balled or kicked it backwards al la Casboult. Who do these kids think they are taking the game on?!

Learn to spoil first. Requires several years of dour application.

He should watch some footy and learn bits and pieces off other players. Said he doesn't watch any footy from memory.

Maybe it's because some young blokes footy IQ is at different levels Leon.
It's probably far simpler for some teams to plonk a developing forward where it suits them, and leave them there to learn their craft.
Balta may be a little different being asked to plug holes forward, back and relieving in the ruck.
It would be a luxury to have him play forward or wing or wherever it's an advantage with limited time relieving ruck and let him have time to develop. Alas with Rance and Astbury out, our tallest defender was 187cms or so. I think Naughton is around 194 cms.
But who's to know whether Balta's development will be helped or hindered playing multiple roles so early. It's not ideal, but that where the chips have fallen for him at the moment

Be a beast of a centre or a bloody difficult proposition as a lock or second rower, in league.

Id like him as a winger with that size and pace ,and then the height with the cross field kicks

Makes sense. Get him to do what Richo did in his prime.

I am happy that the selectors are still giving him games at the highest level. So enthusiastic but makes a fair few mistakes and gives away more than his share of frees but he is still green at AFL level and his career so we have to make allowances for that as he has the potential to be something special for the Tigers in years to come.

Don't mind him being enthusiastic and making errors, giving away frees. Rather refine that enthusiasm than have to extract it out of a young player.

His main problem is he trying to do everything at 100mph. Like when he rushes the opposition player with the ball too fast and is easily sidestepped and then is out of play. Just needs to learn to slow down sooner and effect a tackle. Timing adjustment.

Considering we picked him up at pick 25, he is very weak at reading the game. When did he take up the game? At 16?
Sam Taylor went a couple of picks later..

Just give him the confidence to play his natural game and with time I believe we'll be mighty impressed.
I had to look this up and yes, he’s given away 14 frees and has received only 5.

Certainly is giving away a few frees. Is averaging 2.3 a game despite only 65% game time. He's 9th on the list of most average frees against. Saying that rucks do get their fair share of frees against with 5 of the top 7 in the list for frees against being ruckmen. Nankervis is 13th.

all my favourite bigs have given away heaps of frees.

keep up the good work Notorius

What a game... more than broke even in the ruck. His follow up work was superb - old school follower.

The extra depth he can get in his kicks is also an absolute weapon - especially forward of centre.
