Noah Balta - Welcome to Tigerland

Assuming our new coach isn't Mini, it will be very interesting to see what the newbie has in mind, to get the most out of our assets, especially beasts like Balta. I imagine that, in order to sell themselves to the panel choosing the coach, each applicant will be outlining where they see our relative strengths and weaknesses in terms of gameplan, playing list, etc. Hopefully, the successful applicant can see a near-term future that isn't quite as doom and gloom as it may currently appear.
Not sure I agree Celebration. There can be a considerable conflict between our footy club's commercial interests and our footy department success interests, and I suspect that is in play now and in the manner you describe.
I think a pretty major overhaul is required to get us back to top 4 competitive. I'd prefer the incoming coach try to prepare the selection committee for that likelihood, rather than give them news about the state of the list which is overly optimistic.

All post bye. It’s damning.
We’ve also conceded large amounts of inside 50s most of the year, particularly since the bye. Noah’s positioning has been awful the last couple of weeks, but our defence has had to cop the ball coming in way too easily. Something the new coach really has to tighten up next season. The defence was holding up pretty manfully but the last few weeks the dam wall has broken.

That highlights the biggest problem here.

We have had Balta attempting to play two roles, the interceptor and key stopper. Not even Alex Rance had to play both roles, he had DTLD Astbury playing on the big boys so he could do everything else. As good as Balta is, he still isn't Alex Rance.
Agree, Balta is not a stopper and we shouldn't want him to play that role. He was or still is the number one intercept back in the league. Interceptors can't be stoppers because if they are they intercept far less.
Of course we would hope he had done better one on one but that isn't his key strength.
My main issue with him up forward was just his forward craft in getting to the right spots, knowing when to lead and where to lead to.
He has looked better at that in the last couple of weeks but it is a very small sample size

One thing never changes …I wonder which one that is ?

The interesting thing is that the inside 50s are basically the same as last year but we were the number 1 attack in the league last year

Phewwwww , we won’t have to waste a future AA key defenders pre season by trying to pretend he can play as a full time forward

Whoever decided at half time to tell Noah to worry more about Alir Alir then go for the ball should be sacked.

Utterly conflicted when it comes to Balta.

At first I was certain he was a backman, now I’m open to the forward experiment.

As long as they don’t play him as a swingman. They are the hallmarks of bad teams.

I’m *smile* scared that he’s actually not smart enough for AFL footy period.

Balta, when on, is all confidence. Moreso as a forward.

Very hard to build confidence in your first game starting forward at the end of the season.

I really want to see the game when he creates a couple of mark and goals in the first 10 minutes.

It was a typical Balta-as-forward game. A couple of marks, extremely flaky kicking for goal, and vast swathes of game in which he had zero involvement.

That's my problem with Balta-as-forward (apart from the not kicking a whole lot of goals thing, of course). He's too good a player for it to be ok to settle for cameo appearances from him, where more often than not he's the comic relief.

Balta-as-backman is infinitely better than Balta-as-forward. His mistakes in the backline are overblown, and most can be solved through judicious application of the The Balta Rule (say it with me, Noah - No. Short. Kicks. EVER). And the way our midfield has leaked this season, the Great Rancelot himself would have had some pretty iffy outcomes too. Yes, Balta-as-backman will inevitably have goals kicked on him, but hey, they all do. I'm firmly in the camp that his good work down back more than outweighs the risks.

That being said.... does he have a tank? Balta-as-Richo could be interesting.
