Nick Vlastuin

Uncharacteristic game from Nick. I thought he had a bit of a shocker personally. Really seemed to lack his usual energy & intensity.
Hopefully picks it up against the Crows.

he did have a shocker. I talked easy,jr. into putting him in his supercoach side

"he'll average 10 marks a game and go AA" i go

He definitely under-performed, but thats not unusual for Rd1.

Reckon he's Top 5 for upside in our side

He was awful, Olds. He has to get an opponent for a while. Tighten him up a bit. Plus ones get soft defensively. Flossy got a bit better as the night wore on.

Round 1. A few had the night off.

Reckon Broad being out affected Nicks game. Vlas plays best when he's not man marking but just roams around intercepting and mopping up. A bit like Rance. No coincidence he played his best footy late last year when Broad was in the team.

I agree & Broad not being there we lose our flexibility with Grimes as well as he had to play 3rd tall

With Nathan out we lose a contested ball player with height, endurance and mobility that can lock down and sag off to assist Rance and Dave.

Broad releases Tigga said it every week after he came in last year, he also allows for the Tigers to maintain that hard rolling defence that can shift and accommodate whoever opposition coaches try to roll through there.

With Grimes, Broad and Tigga providing hardness and the ability to all play tall and small our defence becomes unique, and extremely hard to crack with the pressure applied further up the field.

Agree with all comments.

Broad has and is a huge loss.

We might be scored heavily until he returns.

Vlas played one of his poorer games for a long time but improved towards the end. ( as the team did ).

Having that extra height who has toughness, pace, can intercept and play on either a tall or small helps players like Houli, Vlas and B Ellis.

Thought both B Ellis & Vlas struggled at times. Coincidence?

Time will tell.

Vlas will bounce back.

I really reckon they need to look at Garthwaite to fill Broads role till he returns. Kid looked impressive in the JLT and gives us another tall mobile. Would play him in Concas role.

Too much emphasis is placed on Broad being out.

The big one was Houli.

Our defence looked dysfunctional without him.

The loss of Houli, Broad, Daniel and of course Dion was quite noticeable.

As stated before the match the 4 ins did not provide what the 4 outs do.

Agree!

was Nick on the guy that kicked 5? Wright?

A couple of very dodgy free kicks early really seemed to unsettle him. Started to second guess himself.
Wright and Curnow also both quick, which is not comforting to someone like Vlastuin.

Having four of your better players out shouldn't cripple you. Particularly when your best four are still playing.

But it seems it does.

People who stated this were condemned on this forum pre match!! There is a reason those four were in the team by the end of the year and we were injury free so it was clear they provided us with the best balance and structure for our game plan. I don’t mind the idea of Garthwaite coming in to play broads position. He is a real competitor like Broady.

So where n how did it cripple us?

We played a poor first ten minutes of footy. After that we out scored Carlscum by almost ten goals for the rest of the match. Team might have been a touch rusty playing off a months shorter preparation time than Carlscum, but a simple matter of accuracy in front of goal would have turned a tight contest into a parade. We went at less than 50% scoring accuracy to their 75%.
