NFL & NCAA Football Threads

Clearly game situation matters. A championship game with it all on the line when leading by 2 scores is different to an in-season game in the first qtr at nil-nil. And I am not personally judging using hindsight, I said it was a shocking call at the time.

I think people arguing analytics ignore that each game and situation is unique. You cannot replicate the players/conditions etc etc. Perhaps he may have missed the FG and the momentum shift would have occured anyway?

As for Goffs quote, all the disasters happened after the 4th down turnover. Coincidence? Momentum is a crazy thing in sport.

I'm not a Lions fan and I'm all for positive football but I just think Dan didn't really own the decision. Perhaps he didn't think he had to? IMO that game was lost because of that first call. He came out praising the 49ers like they turned it around.

Will be super surprised if the Chiefs don't do a number on the 49ers.

Ultimately, Dan is on millions coaching an NFL team and I'm yelling from the cheap seats.....

All fair points well made MD I’m not really arguing with you just looking at it from the other side of the fence.

I think the Super Bowl will be closer than many think. KC don’t have anywhere near the running game that the Lions do which is what troubled SF the most.

Niners will need to look at double teaming Kelce. Keep him in check and they will be a good show.

Lions get 4.6/rush.

Niners are just OK. Lucky to be there. Their D is on many measures poor.

Mahomes is a dual threat. Goff, whilst he had a decent game, is no Mahomes. And the Chiefs have clicked at the right time. A bit like the Hawks in 2013-15. And the tigers in a way. 6 premierships but never finished on top in those years, but produced when it counted. I see a lot of our 2020 flag in their run. A known champ with some question marks. Getting to the big dance the harder way, playing away from home.

Agree on Pacheco, he's very average in the scheme of runnings backs. Provides a lot of energy and bounce but doesn't have the dynamism of some of the elite RB. But he is not a key. They still have WR options if Kelce is double teamed. They couldn't stop Brady/Gronk and Mahomes/Kelce is the closest thing I've seen to them.

KC should be at least a 7 point favourite for mine. (I think the 49ers are actually favourites??)

Crazy odds. Crazy.

Crazy odds. Crazy.
Yeh, could argue 49ers should have lost to Packers 2 weeks ago. They lost to Rams in last round. The Ravens pumped them 2 weeks before that. Their offence isn't firing, Purdy still has question marks. And their D is brittle.

Mahomes is a known winner striking form. The Chiefs D is a strength.

As you say the odds are crazy.

Strange, the commentators kept mentioning how the Niners defense struggles against the run. That’s only been the last few games, otherwise it’s really the pass game that theyve struggled with this year.

If it’s now both, then that spells trouble unless they can turn it around over the 2 week break somehow.

If they get big games from McCaffrey/Kittle/Samuel they should be able to put up a score. But the Chiefs have won 6 of their last 7 with 4 away wins thrown in. They are finding form at the right time and have the best pressure QB in the game. Their D is highly ranked on almost all the measures. They should be favourites.

I hope SF fire up offensively.

I guess the 49ers haven’t impressed me in either of their playoffs. They won but I felt the other team basically choked up wins they should have had. Good on them for being good enough to take advantage of that though. Chiefs looked pretty good to me. In form.

Chiefs as underdogs is crazy. Will not lose.
Any given Sunday…. But yeah I don’t get it - 49ers should have lost both the other matches IMO

But then again Collingwood should have been beaten by dees and gws too….

Form. Chiefs know how to win big games. They are firing at the right time. Mahomes is the best QB in the game. Their defence is fit and firing.

49ers are flakey. The secondary is awful. Purdy hasn't shown he can throw it in big moments.

I just don't get how the 9ers are favourites.

I’ve watched and read several times this week from numerous NFL media personalities that they can’t believe the Niners are favourites. Strangely though, the market hasn’t moved. Will be interesting to see if it does closer to kick off.
