Some of the strings attached to the AFL money was that we increase the number of staff in the football department and the back office. I think we were 3 short in the footy dept of the AFL minimum requirement.

The totals are in the AFL document re Equalization.
Minimum for Total Footy Dept was 28.
We had 25, Melbourne had 26.
We have since lost Newett and Clarke (and Campbell out of contract) but added Smith.
Accordingly we need to hire four more staff in the footy department to reach minimum numbers to get the AFL money.

Bailey....interesting.

Depending on the role would have much preferred Laidley or Eade.

All for Hardwick hiring people he knows / respects but it is a bit of a bad look when you just hire mates as oppossed to interview people and look for quality staff.

Reckon you're going a bit hard, Bailey has had premiership experience and has a good rep as a development coach. The fact that Hardwick may have played or coached with him and Ross Smith doesn't make them bosom buddies, maybe he respects their coaching abilities.

Bailey has been very poor tactically. That's where I thought we'd get someone with senior experience to help out on match day with tactics. Hardwick struggles in this area and is very slow or non existant to change losing matchups or try something new. Seems to have no plan B so to speak.

Very underwhelming appointment. How many ex mates from old clubs is that now on our coaching panel? Worry Hardwick is just surrounding himself with yes men.

About 3. Didn't hurt Clarkson surrounding himself with people he knew.

Just because they're mates doesn't mean they're yes men. Mates don't blow smoke up your arse, they tell it to you straight. As for Hardwick's lack of tactical nous, I think next year will tell the tale. Previously he's been all about structures and lessons and hasn't minded Conca getting towelled by Milne, for example.

I'm neither here nor there about Bailey. He might be a very good development coach. It certainly wasn't Melbourne's kids who most let them down. He is definitely respected in AFL circles. But I agree with lavy that if we have another couple of spots to fill it would be nice to poach someone at the cutting edge. Trouble is, those guys are all getting senior gigs! I still like Simon Goodwin but good luck getting him. Bucks will need to restock the fridge too.

So you have to put on people to get some money. Seems odd when you then have to part of that moneyo to those you have just put on.

Are you impressed by Bailey's tactical acumen Ian?
You know the drill leysy, because Craig has gone elsewhere and Bailey to us then Bailey is far superior. If Craig had come to us and Bailey elsewhere then Craig would be the genius we are after and Bailey an absolute lemon.

Don't tar me with that brush, I wanted and still do, Craig as head of Sports Science with the Senior Assistant as an add on.

Bailey wouldn't be my first choice but he has had premiership experience at more than 1 club and does have a good rep as an assistant. The fact that he was a poor head coach doesn't make him a poor assistant xoach. His main failure seemed to be that his game plan was poor, he got rid of senior players too early and he wasn't a great motivator, none of which necessarily impact his role at Richmond.

Bailey has done well as an assistant previously.
At the risk of sitting on the fence I'll take a wait & see approach again. It's very difficult to ascertain what the role of these guys is/will be, let alone critique it.
If he's on board I just hope he does a great job.

Totally don't understand the fascination with Craig and head of sports science. Sports science is exactly that, a science, which means nothing is accepted until it is researched and published in a peer reviewed journal. There aren't many secrets in the sports science world.

In addition, experience means very little. What they were doing 10 years ago is ancient history, much of Craigs experience is completely irrelevant now. The science has changed and the game has changed. Best thing you can hope for is a head of sports science who can spot good young talent in the crop of PHD and Masters candidates that are lining up to join the sports science departments of AFL clubs these days.

It's these kids who are most on top of all the latest research in the field, not necessarily the crusty old farts who have been doing it for 30 years.

Fair points Linus, but the really valuable commodities are those, perhaps slightly less than crusty, who have experience combined with a thirst for knowledge that keeps them at the cutting edge.

It's quiet a task trawling through the journals and sorting out what may be relevant to our game, I doubt a full time coach would have the time to devote to this. Perhaps with less on his plate he can get back to it. I still maintain they had this covered with Misson and at least one of his assistants I know can get the job done.

Bailey? Totally underwhelming.

Think Eade would have been a really good fit but seems he is going for the Saints job.
