ive been a denver fan since 1991 and have probably followed melo more than anyone else here. for what its worth heres my take on the trade from a knicks POV. melo may be just be a scorer and lacks application defensively (he can defend, but chooses not to) but he is the best pure scorer in the nba. late in the game he is as good as anyone in the nba. he had 10 match winning buzzer beaters before lebron had his first. but his strength is that he can score in so many ways its scary in fact he can score in any way. lightning quick first step means he is past you before u know it, he has range on his jump shot and knocks down 3's for fun always has, he's way to strong for most 3's and way too quick for 4 and 5's. quite simply he can and does score from anywhere and can score on anyone. he has struggled against the very best zone defences early in his career but his recent playoff performances suggest he has overcome that with maturity and understanding his game and playoff bball better.
Billups is the reason for some of that maturity. whoever was playing down mr. big shot is clueless. he may be 34 but who cares? he is the first pg you'd pick if you want a build a team to beat boston. billups is made for playoffs, he gets melo and dont underestimate his leadership. amare must now become a monster on the boards and in the post for his team and take a backward step for his team. its now melo's team. surround him with a perimeter defender that can play 2/3 and a massive 7 footer that can set picks and screens for him and they can contend as long as they get some bench depth that can provide some instant offence. melo is good for 38 mins a night and when he is happy is a winner of jordan like proportions.
