Nathan (Axel) Foley [MERGED]

at the moment foley is a slightly quicker version of tucky. Bombs the ball and appears to be struggling with modern tempo of game. Im sure he will get better but would need to. Chance to be the sub this week

Thats my take - he has Tucks spot at present, provides the experience and body Tuck has but with better polish and speed. Lets hope the polish returns.

You need to be pro-active, dont fall in love with the player, love the jumper.
If foley allows the club to get a player it requires, then he needs to be moved on,
Same with Edwards
Same with Morton
Same with White
the club needs to do more "Grigg" trades....

I'm happy with his output so far.

I'm not. I'm a big fan and I expect more. We are getting smashed in the clearances this year and a key reason is that Axel is giving us very little in that area

if his trying to find some touch coming back from injury he needs to do it at coburg.
plan and simple. we cant play him because he was good 2 years ago, then we might as well get Pettifer and Hyde back

Agree with the clearances part. Is only a shadow of his former self with only 2,1 and 1 clearance in 3 of his 4 games, the other he managed 6. Hasn't got that part of his game going yet but I don't think that warrants dropping him.

Surley he deserves a bit of time to get the AFL touch back, no doubt if stays fit he will have a very good 2nd half of the year

Disagree, he is in there to get clearances, it absolutely *smile* me when people keep referring to his burst of pace. He was the most effective for us when he was getting leather poisoning and was an absolute terrier for the ball under every pack. I've said it before on this thread, he has lost a lot of size, which makes him less effective in contested situations. Don't think we will see the best of him thus year.

We need him back at his best averaging 25 touches a game. Very down on output at the moment but it's fair enough. Tuck would probably offer us more but Foley is the better player. Happy to get the miles in his legs for now but he needs to keep gradually building.

Good measured post. He is a bloke we need put time into, as we know what he can do if his body allows.

Absolutely, Mr Chips.

I know we've got Chimpa playing OP Bartel ATM (not as much as he should) but I think Axel would profit from a half dozen or more games sagging off to the half back line to get his zing back. You know, see ball, hit ball, run and kick. A shimmy thrown in every now and then. But mainly straight line. Great for his finishing too.

That long lay off really hurt Foley's development. Not to whinge: he could be Coughlan, eh?

It's a real balancing act. Obviously Batch has to be given a gig. An old school comer. And Conca will be somebody one day. But we don't want to turn Axel into the next Lambert.

FWIW I'd like to see Tuck in with Foley spared to the half back line or even the full back line for now. Even Wing Defence. (Forgive the netball ref but it's a pretty soft position - Jimmy Bartel robbed Gary Ablett jr of a Brownlow from there.)

Morton can do another ten in the Magoos. (When he understands that purgatory is a long time he may see the light.) But Titch has to go.

Foley deserves a break. Let's plan a future for him too. A total gun.

Best game so far this year last night.

Getting better.

Each game he is getting under his belt is getting him closes to 2009 form. Good luck Axel

I think there was a point when Lids and Cotch were resting on the bench and the commentator was complaining that we shouldn't have had them both off at the same time. But what it meant was that Tuck and Foley were in the centre. I almost teared up - it was just like old times. And what it actually means is that if Tuck, Foley, Grigg, Lidds, Cotchin all get a bit of form then we actually have a rotation going with a lot of inside class.

Was rapt with his game, his tackling was fantastic too.

Yep, is only going to get better with more games.
If he can regain his best form we have a very exciting midfield

This is all great to read.
Positive stuff - and exciting too.
