Nankervis !!

good post Carts, well argued.

Here's a few counters.

We have a great tap ruck in Soldo - when both are fit, we select Nank over him every time. Why?

Now Ryan is around I doubt you'll see NankSoldo again - will be interesting to see if Ryan is out, will they select Soldo as a backup? Or will they go with Miller as ruck/forward and bring Marlion in?

6-6-6 rule has been around since 2019 and we've definitely had super dynamic midfields in that time. Is this midfield potentially better at breaking? Maybe. Mini is definitely putting more emphasis on clearances and contests which we used to habitually lose even when we won flags. 6-6-6 is not a new rule.

Nankervis not a great tap ruck you reckon? Maybe, but his other qualities make his value immense - not least his leadership. Just FYI, here's his stats for the last two games - now he's back and fit.

Notice anything interesting about the hitout stats? Small sample and all, I don't have HOTA but you get the point.

Now, you have a fair point about potential longevity - we killed Maric, another undersized warrior, with too much workload and his career was way too short for his talent. It's possible that Nank declines quickly after 30. However, next year they'll go with NankSon banking on Ryan continuing to develop, and (hopefully) Miller as a fwd/ruck/back utility, and maybe Soldo if they all fall over. So with Ryan we'll have more of a genuine tap ruck at more centre bounces next year you'd reckon.

Post Nank it will be Ryan as no. 1 plus someone else.

I agree that a Nank / Ryan combo is the path of least resistance for 2024, but I still consider the opportunity cost of this setup to be significant, especially as one of our greatest match winners (Dusty) will possibly be in his last 2-3 years.

Moreover, 666 and stand may no longer be new, but our application of the trademark turnover/chaos game plan in this context has, aside from 2020 where everyone was grappling with the new rule(s), been largely unsuccessful. A finals non-appearance and an EF loss.

I think a partial reason for our slide (apart from obvious list senescence) is our inability to fully evolve and optimise our clearance and stoppage structures.

I thought he looked off. Fumbly, dropped marks, undisciplined.
That was his comeback game from injury. he was poor, missed marks and was generally out of touch. But that's really his only poor game for the year.

He's remarkable.

Nank had only 13 of his 47 (27%) hit outs go to advantage. Marshall had 8 of his 29 (27%) go to advantage.

last week Nank had only 12 of his 49 (24%) hit outs go to advantage, Jackson had 7 of his 33 (21%) go to advantage.

The biggest reason for our slide is injury.

Look what has happened to our backline with the band essentially back together?

Balta/Broad/Grimes/Vlas/Rioli/Baker/Short is formidable. (Young is a stop gap, would not be playing if Tarrant/Gibcus fit).

How many games have those 7 all played in together - only 8 of 14

Guess what our record is in those 8 games - 5W 2L 1D (one of those losses was the inexplicable loss to bombers too)

In the other 6 we are 1W 5L

Add Lynch back and no one is in a hurry to face us.

Yes, assume the older the side the more likely increased injury rate (is there data on this) but the reality is our best side on the park is top 4 material.

This is true.

I always look at the elite teams, and what we need to do to beat them.

Collingwood, for example, +1 the contest AND neutral up forward which is insanely ballsy.

We’d need a stronger stoppage setup against them in a preliminary final, for example. They smashed us earlier in the year, scoreboard flattered us.

I also think Mini and Rutten have us structuring up a lot better than Dimma did, as great as he was.

The Big O has grown into one of the best rucks in the comp. Very tall. Long arms. Can jump. Nightmare matchup for the 197cm midget Nank.

Nank used to be a solid consistent performer. Now he is on one week & lowers his colours the next.

The reality is he now struggles against bigger opponents. Means we’re on the back foot to win clearances from the word go.

It’s the elephant in the room (one of a few unfortunately).

Can’t see our new coach being happy with Nank as number one ruck.

Not gonna happen.

The difference between our players best and worst is stark and I don't mean Mitchy.
How they can drop off so dramatically week to week.
Has been a warrior The Nank but boy he (and others) can put in some absolute Barry Crockers!

i had no idea their ruckman was that good. he doesn't look like a baby giraffe anymore.

As for Nank, is there a reason why he is still out of contract? despite last night, he is having a career best season. Letting your captain run out his contract is not a desirable situation.
