midfield depth

I said centre square midfielder. Look, I think Deledio is an awesome player, but his awesomeness has been established everywhere but in the centre square. We are getting into semantics here, but I don't count him as a great midfielder, I count him as a great playmaker off the backline.

Disagree. Deledio was playing the midfield position very well without a great deal of help. Thing is, Deledio is such a good player, he can play almost anywhere, and the Tigers decided that his importance in the backline outweighed the midfield, especially as more players were able to cover the midfield position as time went on. I would love to see Deledio back in the midfield and I have no fears about him performing to a great level in that position. The one thing he appeared to struggle with at times was the tag. As our depth of quality midfielders strengthens (with the likes of MArtin and Cotchin) this becomes less of an issue for Deledio.

The thing is HBF these days is essentially an extra outside midfielder.

Have a look at Lids inside 50's last year. Shows how much he was around the pill most of the day. We need him on HBF for his long kicking class and also because he is another strong body.

Spurts in the midfield will be good...very Goddardesk!

kinda like foley?

We cannot bank on Foley getting back to his best.

Heading down the same path as Coughlan & Brown.

Have to plan for the replacement of Tuck and Foley. Grigg is a long term upgrade on Tuck but we don't have someone replacing Foley. Maybe Contin but we need another. I still think we need to draft another two to three mids over the next two drafts.

Hislop might become an inside mid still. Seems Beavis is thinking along those lines anyway. Needless to say I'm hopeful.

Adam Pattison, Richard Tambling, Jordan McMahon and Adam Thomson would like to welcome Tom Hislop to the Disco Lost Duds Home. ;D

Dont think Disco was ever a fan of McMahon. Like most think he was against the trade. To Navy's memory anyway.

Think all the others are in the home though. ;D

I never defended Sanchez and only really had a fleeting interest in Thomson. Tambling's not a dud, but I'm badly busted with Sir Les.

Yeah fair enough Disco but the home didn't seem big enough with Sir Les, Hislop and Tambling.

And I retract Sanchrz, suggesting you were a fan is a massive sledge. ;D

Muffin never hot another gig did he at GC or elsewhere despite the apparent weakening in talent across the board.
No Sanchez went straight to the exit lounge.
He wasn't that bad a player at the Dogs but his graph(thanks Wallet) went steadily south at Richmond.

He's signed with Glenelg for 2 years apparently.

unlike brown & coughlan, foley was class when he actually played for us this year. he was quality against the hawks despite all the injury concerns. he is still young & will be back at his best mid next year at the latest

All three were young when injuries struck. Nathan Brown was just about the most in form player in the comp, Coughlan was among the games rising stars. We cannot be bank on Foley getting back to his best. I don't think he has been the same top liner since early 2009.

Injury cuts players down harder then we think, Foley has had some serious long term issues. He might do everything right in his rehab but he still doesn't make it back. I just don't think at this stage you can pencil him in as a long term cert in the midfield.

As an aside we have had some bad luck when you look at Brown and Cogs . Coughlan would be our Captain and a 200 Game player by now if it wasn't for those injuries .

Tony Free, who i knew personally, had a knee injury, was young, and captain, and never played again ,due to a cyst growing under kneecap after surgery.

Was cut down way too young,,,,can happen.

I can understand the concerns about Foley but just think about what it will look like if he does return to near his best . I was a Foley sceptic when he first came in as I felt he was too small , but he won me over. At his best he was a gun clearance machine , some of those bursts from the centre were electrifying . It's easy to forget how good he was then .

I remain hopeful and salivating at the thought of Cotchin , Foley and Martin in the centre , Deledio as a running half back and a developing mid tier .

Noone is going to spoil my Christmas with negative thoughts on this . ;D. It's pre season , time to dream a bit . I will save my doubts for the season proper .
