Mid season Draft

In six months time we'll have say picks #1, 19, 20, 26, etc. What's the rush? I can see why we'd like Mutaz and it makes no difference to us if he's out atm. (Everybody else is anyway.)

But I don't see ant pressing need to invest list space in a draft choice with necessarily a very low ceiling. In short - we're in no hurry for more duds.

I take the point entirely.

I think with this covid cohort especially, theres real opportunity to grab 19 and 20yos PSD and MSD, who have demonstrable AFL metrics against men, with way less risk than giving an 18yo a $600k deal.

Im not saying mutaz is or isnt that guy.

Clubs will use it very differently.

We essentially took Marlion for one glorious fairy tale game and got a big bonus

Its not about fairy tales now, we play the long game.

brisbane are on record saying theylle take 3 MSD, which is a harbinger of change surely?

currently, its exploitative, given you can upheave a kid for 6 months.

but I think it will become a real pathway and level up

Seeing RCD being floated due to his uptick in the SANFL... funny if they grab him again.

Unless we're upgrading a kid from our VFL, I see no reason why us or any other club shouldn't be made to offer mid season draftees an 18 month deal. Players are expected to pack up their lives n move to whatever AFL club drafts them for one last sling at the big footy career. But they get no pre season in which to attain AFL fitness levels, learn the game structures or bond with their team mates. Yet they're somehow expected to perform at AFL level, phhht, virtually writing a ticket to failure.

Jed Hagan from WA worth a chance? Still only 20.

I watched him closely and live a fortnight ago,

and was also his biggest fan on here in his draft year.

But its a no from me.

seemed to reach his ceiling at 17 to my eyes.

he is a very good player, but I think Div 2 is his level?

there are plenty of 20 yo's a foot taller who still have room to grow their game.

I stand corrected, played SANFL last year for Woodville-West Torrens.

His numbers over the last 3 years at various clubs look pretty good tbh.
Second tier probably his level, always looked just a little bit soft & sulky, though moving away from home to Adelaide for a year may have hardened him up a bit.

I think thats being very unrealistic

I highly doubt 21% of 2023 national draft players will have played by end of season?

I think talent aquisition is in flux and we'll see less and less 18yos and more and more 20yos proven against men, especially as demand for talent grows (tassie +1, plus concussion retirements)

I reckon theylle raise the draft age soon. Maybe a first round only of 18yos, then into 19 and 20yos
Well of top 14 national draft players of 2023, only 2 haven't played a game. 64 games in total compared to 10 games from mid-season. So realistically, yes I believe chances of success in the mid-season draft is slim. If we have 3 picks would be ecstatic if 1 makes it.

What we're missing though are Gun youngsters to build our team around, ones to replace our premiership guns. Only the national draft can provide that potential (or trades at premium price and contracts ala Taranto & Hopper).

We have a strong hand at the next national draft. Need to make the most of it.

Me niether, eZ. We all just like Mutaz.

And yes - bad clubs will use it badly and one or two good clubs will use it very well, considering it's an MSD. And then to moderate effect.

It was a fairytale, brother. We were all there for it.

If they bring in daylight saving it will surely catch on!

Most AFilthL contracts are exploitative IMO, eZ. But uprooting an 18yo for six months is harsh even by their standards.

It's good thinking. The Covid cohort is still coming through, eZ, so clubs may go down this path. But the same players will be available in the ND. They gotta meet the criteria. That said D'Ambrosio and Durham are great examples. Note the club that identified them.

I don't believe in emotions. Everybody plays the winning game. Some better than others.

Did you see Sam Davidson on the weekend? 25yo. Truly a journeyman. Who brung him? Brindley?

ok dumb questions time
I watch bits of the VFL games on my phone
with Mutaz i have both yeah and nah moments

but he doesn't grab me , I would have put Callum Moore and Garthwaite as significantly better output in our VFL side in their time
and they ultimately didn't make it at AFL level

are people that are going to our VFL games saying he should be picked up ?

no didn't see him.

sam clohesy GC is an interesting case study - was always under their nose - played for Coolangatta and was in their Academy for years.

he always had the attributes hes showing - fast, tank, rugged, goal kicker.

but he had to win the VFL rising star to get a shot.

as an aside, the Cats Cat B'd his younger brother Ted, because his mum once ate a Bunny Chow at a Johburg township-themed restaurant.

on farces, Brisbane knocked back by the AFL to draft their own player development officer Jake Lloyd MSD.

Begs the question, Why would Brisbane want a retired 32yo small forward, when there's 3 dozen 20yo's who will offer more for a dozen years longer.

which brings us back to the notion of 6 month, $50K deals,

in the context of $1b broadcasting deal, its a version of Black Birding.

The most incompetent, lowly, dumbest, laziest Old Xav in AFL house, someones backward drug addled nephew, would be on a secret twice that.

one is a gladiator; a gloriously devoted professional athlete,

the other slinks like Golum between texting porn in the photocopier room, to doing lines in the dunny.

not an original tale unfortunately.

I like him but wouldnt take him, we have Vlastuin, Broad, Brown and Trezise playing similar roles. Do we really need another medium size defender?
