Membership 2019

no you don't understand my thinking in the slightest. I wasn't suggesting one category of membership is more important than another. thats ridiculous. I only suggested this for transparency in membership figures. All clubs fudge their numbers (including us), and I am suggesting we use something along the lines of my pro rata method to create a true "net figure." as tigerlove's post shows, only 45% of AFL club memberships are for 11 games or more. to claim there are over a million AFL club members is an absolute scam IMO.

The most pertinent comparison would be a weighted membership numbers along these lines
Membership engagement = total number on books
Membership commitment = Sum (X x G) where G = number of games in membership package. Eg 1, 3, 11, 17 however each club packages them up and X = number of members in each category ie a 0 game membership isn't a commitment.
Membership support = total dollars received from membership only (excluding reserved seating and other add ons)
Membership revenue = total dollars from all members for game day benefits ie gate, seats, pre match functions even c

Clubs have been offering non traditional memberships for twenty years.

I previously lived in Brisbane (and was an interstate member)

I now live in Miami, FL (and I am an international member)

I have been a member for 18 years in a row.

Why should my membership be counted as a 0.2 because I can't get to 11+ games? I was a member when we only had 27,251 members total.

It's not to devalue you as a member it is to make it easier to compare one club to another in regards to membership totals. I.E. if Horthorn has 25000 pet memberships in it's total, it's not really comparing apples with apples.

It's all relative anyway. All clubs would have a similar membership breakdown.

Tigers on top with 100k+, daylight second, then come the minnow clubs lead by hawthorn (who get 14k to a home game) and collingwood (who can't sell out a semi final home game).

Don't understand this thinking at all, the figure is correct in the fact that it reflects the number of people, (members), engaged with the club. Who gives a sh!t what category anyone has. I don't consider my membership any less or more important than anyone else's.
RFC motto "One Club" same applies to membership.

I think it's important to know the categories. People continually compare to the past numbers to now but it's not comparing apples with apples. 100K memberships today doesn't mean the same as 100K would have 10 or 20 years ago. If my Tigers have 100K members that are 11 game members and someone else's team have 100K members consisting of 3 games, 1 game and dog memberships I like to think that my team is better supported with engaged supporters.

just to repeat, its not to downgrade or devalue your membership. Personally, I have a high admiration for our interstate and international members for supporting us from afar. its just to provide more legitimate figures. there is nothing more to it than that.

The final totals dont include pets though. To count as a member in the AFL's final total you have to have game access, be a minimum cost of $50 and have contact details for a real person.
The goal posts are in the same position for every club, we are comparing clubs based on that criteria. We are the winner! The club pulling a swifty is Adelaide with their free online membership being included on their website total but when the AFL apply the criteria before announcing the final totals, those fake numbers will be dropped. They're only fooling themselves.

In saying that clubs can charge what they like for memberships, i'm looking at you Carlton, so numbers can be inflated by selling cheap game access memberships. I havent noticed Richmond selling 11 home games for $99 like Carlton though so i reckon we're pretty legit and have pretty reasonable membership revenue.

Now I'm really upset!

Almost to 102,000 members now.

This has to be a record surely?

Anyone have figures for other clubs?
