Matthew Clarke

Okay, so we’ve gone from 2017 to straight after the 2016 draft?

Even so, Frank didn’t just read out a bunch of names on draft night then drop the mic and walk off into the sunset. There was clearly a succession plan in place and I’d find it very hard to believe Clarke wasn’t heavily involved in all aspects of recruiting that off-season.

Give Clarke his due credit.
If he took over after the 2016 draft, then yes, 2017 was his first year in charge.

Of course he was involved. But he wasn't the boss.

I'm giving Clarke his full due. I've listed every pick he's made.

I think Clarke’s record so far is pretty good considering the draft hand he has been given. Hopefully he gets given a good chance to have a real crack at the draft this year.

Ross is being retrained because he can't get a kick, SA. No zip at the fall (compare to Dow or RCD). He was precocious in his first year. A man-child. Heavy-footed.

Clarke took over in 2017, so he doesn't get Bolton and Graham. Blokes from other clubs is Blair, always has been.

We're not turning on Clarke, we're examining his record.
I went to a club pre-draft thing led by Clarke where he had Bolton outside the likely top 20 and therefore a chance to make it to our pick that year. When questioned he said we'd absolutely take him if available.

My memory of that night differs.
Clarke only covered players outside the top 20 and didn’t cover Bolton because he said there was no chance he’d be available to us. Think he had him at 13. Clarke loved Jack Scrimshaw.
Rumour going around was we were interested in Elliot Himmelberg.
I stand to be corrected though.

I think we're both half-right! I can't remember many of the players covered now – top 20 or next 20 – and I think that's because none of the top 20 were going to get through to us so I didn't sweat on it. But someone asked "Why isn't Bolton in the top 20 list on the screen?" and he said "Oops that's an oversight!" And he definitely said Scrimshaw "may turn out to be the best in the draft", so we thought he was who we'd have taken if not for Prestia. Three premierships after that sliding doors moment....

The point is that Clarke led the recruiting presentation in draft week 2016.

The screenshot of a HS headline below shows Matt Clarke described as recruiting boss.

Well done gents. I can't remember anything other than the vision shown of Shai doing a party trick handball behind his back & thinking I bloddy well hope he comes to us.

A lot riding on RCD and Dow.

If both are busts then you'd have to say the head recruiter has failed.

I'm not putting words in Jack's mouth, but it's about the midfield. Cotchin, Martin, Prestia, Edwards were all drafted over a decade ago. Lambert should have been. Bolton and Graham are the only players we have drafted since 2009 getting a regular gig in our midfield. KMac and Pickett on the wings.

Smalls drafted 2010-16 (Frank in charge): Conca, Batchelor, Helbig, MacDonald, Houli, Jakobi, Hislop (3x re-tread), Ellis, Arnot (3 spots ahead of L.Neale), O'Hanlon, A.Maric, Verrier, G.Turner, KMac, McDonough, Petterd, Lonergan, Williams, Lennon (what was he? a slow flanker? one of Frank's worst), Gordon, Lloyd, Banfield, Miles, Thomas, Ellis, Menadue, Drummond, Short, George, Lambert, Rioli, Markov, Marcon, Graham, Bolton, Stengle.

Grigg and Yarran traded in.

Then the rest I've listed above.
Farkkkkk…it’s a miracle we win 3 flags with that. Talk about just how good our late picks have been. We need to trade DOWN the draft not up.

It’s the midfield you say… hmm, you don’t say. We just don’t draft enough pure mids. Its not that hard.

Dev Robertson is looming as another in a long line we pass on. I’m not sure why. We don’t take the obvious ball winners at the draft table.

Higgins would have been classed as an obvious ball winner I would have thought

Dev Robertson was the obvious pick at the Dow selection. He is going to be a beauty. The is still hope for Dow but I can't see him ever getting to Dev's level.
