Luke Meehan and Conditioning team

Has to the puntroad turf either to soft or too hard vs the Triple MCG

Hope the club has brought in extra re$ource given the ridiculous number of players currently on our injury list.
Meehan has his hands full & then some. Rehabbing our number one asset as best we can must be our top priority.
Get our players right.

Introduction of the soft cap
We lost some very important people in that time.

By all means, review our strength and conditioning staff but people be acting like the injuries have cost us a premiership run. We were a bottom 10 side even at full strength on our best day.

It is very hard for us punters to know if there is an issue and if so what it is. Sometimes people get injured playing footy, it’s a contact sport.
Strength and conditioning staff are often trained in things like exercise physiology or physiotherapy, they are not doctors/orthopaedic surgeons. They often rely on expert opinion of medical specialists.
I don’t really have an opinion on whether our team is good or not, to be honest I wouldn’t have a clue.
We do have a lot of soft tissue injuries but also we have had a couple of big fellas with back injuries, like Colina and now Fawcett. You expect that the footy dept and Benny would be well aware of it.

Being called into question in the media now. That is if we count Cornes as "media".

Cornhead will find any reason to bag the Tigers. He never attacks any other club the way he does us.

Just ignore the ignoramus, don't give him oxygen.

Sure, some of the injuries couldn't have been prevented,

But some could - the Prestia one is 100% on Meehan.

Playing a veteran who has done countless hammies 5 days after travelling to Gold Coast for round 1 - Criminal.
Does Meehan select the team?

Does Meehan direct Prestia to say whether he's good to play or not?

Or would he say - there's a higher risk of injury if Prestia plays after 5 days - then the MC selects the team.

Sports science is a game of probabilities, not absolutes- to blame Meehan directly for Prestia's hammy is too simplistic.

All depends on maintenance. He'd be the last to say if a player's fit to play. Also, how does he assess players' training?

On the other side, are players bullsh!tting to him/coaches that they feel right to play but realistically aren't?

He's part of the selection process.

Absolutely. People in his role rule out players who (often ill advisedly as they are competive guys) put their hands up to play all the time.

True to an extent. However, ultimately Luke's role weighs up that risk. He knows Dion's history, loading, fitness, program and any repercussions of it better than anyone. It's his job.

You reckon if he said "Look Adem, Dions had a long history of hamstring issues, he's a year older and coming off a 5-day break after a 2.5 hour return plane trip in his first game of the year. Given all this and we have a long year ahead we've mapped out a program for him to miss this game, then return against Port - OK".

As people in his role do routinely - A MC with coach in his second game holding the overriding vote - you think is gunna overrule that?

On Luke in general - Combine this year with our repeat soft tissue injuries (remember when Burge would prep our guys to return, always give them an extra week or two, then they'd hit the ground like never missed a beat). Now they are pinging them again.

Stuck up for Luke last year as first year and could be unlucky. But lightning rarely strikes twice.

Must be a concerted review into our whole fitness program, of which Luke heads. Cos, luck aside, it;s simply not working.

Agree on the assessment of Prestia. A lot of people here assumed that Prestia would miss round 1 after playing 5 days earlier up at Carrara, but he played against Carlton and got injured. Surely that was foreseeable.

We have suffered a lot of injuries over the last 3 years, and not all of them have been things like Gibcus's knee, many have been soft tissue and training injuries.

I have no expertise in this area but clearly this needs to be looked at. A thorough assessment by an outside party who does know what they are doing. We seem to be getting more injuries than most teams and I would only accept coincidence as an explanation with some evidence to back it up.

I'm sure the club would be looking at this, but something is not working, and we need it fixed.

Lastly on Luke, and this has zero impact on his ability to perform his immediate role.

But he still needs some more media training. Must have said "um" 50 times in his latest clip.

Just something to tidy up to get confidence from the audience (in this case supporters), and no doubt in future various endeavours.

Needs to do toastmasters to learn how to speak.

Media training just coaches you to stay on message and think in advance about what questions you could get asked and how to deal with them. Basically repeat your message and don’t talk about stuff you don’t know.

Does my head in that. Right up there with people who keep using the word “actually”.

“We actually got in the car, and ended up actually going to Bendigo and we actually got lost if you can believe it.”

If you ever hear anyone using the word “actually” over and over when speaking to people, run for the hills. They are “actually” a moron.
